Well Bumble festering in her own filth has taken a turn for the worse, she is doing it constantly and now has urine scalds on her bum :( We've been to the vets today and I have antibiotics, loxicom and hibiscrub to keep her clean and check it isn't an infection that's causing her to do this. We'll see how she goes this week.

My question to the vet was weather to use a barrier cream. My pigs are outdoor pigs on woodshavings and piles of hay. Would using a barrier cream attract more dirt or is it likely to help healing? What's your experiences.
 
Oops just seen another similar thread with Helen suggesting a barrier cream. I didn't realise that ovarian cysts could be behind this though and the last vet told me to leave her cysts (if she has them as it was just suspected) as there was nothing they could really do
 
Yes it was a pig I remember from when I volunteered at the clinic that had cysts and was leaking urine. She was spayed if I remember correctly.

Barrier cream does help as it stops them getting sore and should sink in quickly. If you could keep her on Vetbed though it would help.
 
Thanks Helen, if it doesn't appear to be a bacterial infection then I will mention that to the vets. It was yet another new one at my place but she did seem to be very knowledgeable with guinea pigs so hoping

Well I don't know if its just the pain relief but she seemed ever so slightly cleaner today so obviously not been sitting in her own pee-pee so much. She is soooooooo not enjoying the daily cleaning of her bottom or the meds and usually protests by doing lots of poops (in all fairness I suppose I am stimulating her bum lol)
 
Quick update on poor little Bumble, I had to take a urine sample for the vets as there's been minimal improvement. Phone call this morning from the vets to say it is high in concentration, it also contains blood and bacteria :( So I'm taking her in first thing in the morning back to the vets for an ultrasound to see if there's anything particular causing a problem for her. On the plus side her burns are healing much better and the fur is growing back around her lady parts (although still looking very swollen)

Given how long this has been going on - Please consider getting a urine culture done to properly identify the bacteria and their resistance/susceptibility to antibiotics.

The vet is doing this as well. I had suspected cysts from other symptoms like enlarged nipples but there are no obvious masses from physical examination which is why the vet is going in with an ultrasound as well.

Ok well its been a whirlwind day for Bumble, I dropped her at the vets at 9 for her ultrasound. Around 10.30 the vet called and yep there are ovarian cysts showing and do I give permission for her to have anaesthetic to remove her ovaries, of course I did!

So I have picked up Bumble, gave her a thick slice of cucumber which she ate half of on her way home. Set up the indoor cage (wasn't able to do it in advance as wasn't expecting an operation) and managed to syringe a small amount of critical care to her before I left her to hide away. She has everything she needs in there and some extra leafy veg (assuming it will be more comfortable to eat). She is covered with a fleece for her to feel extra secure.

The vet went into a lot of detail about the operation and her decision was to go in from the sides (like you would a cat spay - never having kept cats I haven't a clue lol) instead of from the tummy as it should then be more comfortable healing for her and less likely to attract dirt/infection. I suppose on that score time will tell. She has her check up at 10.30 tomorrow and then in 10 days is due to have the staples removed.

Considering more recently my GP has recommended that I have a hysterectomy, I think my little girl might be coming out in sympathy illnesses for me
 
Poor bumble! Funny I was just explaining to someone else today about spaying from the sides. Makes so much more sense. Glad she seems ok and hoping she will be fine now! Xx
 
Poor angel, at least you know what is going on now. Hope she is feeling much better soon.

Thanks everyone, I find it hard with Bumble as she is a secret eater. The only way we've been able to get her to eat during lap time is to wrap her in a towel so she can't see you watching :)) I'm working out how much she's eating by checking what's missing but my memory fails me sometimes. She's still not talking to me and hiding away lol

Well Friday was her post op check up and I was a little concerned about lack of poops. The vet wasn't overly concerned but told me to take her back on Saturday if she still hadn't pooped. As I had a wedding to go to I was certain she wouldn't and made a promise to myself that if she had pooped when I got home from work on Friday I would go for a run... well she had pooped so I had to run lol :))

She's back to normal completely now and is probably eating more than she normally does (but then she is normally underpig of 4 so doesn't usually have her pick of the veg). I am eager to get her back outside with the others but daren't do it til the staples are out as I don't want her getting hurt but its hard when you have lap time and she is clearly much happier being with Bea (these were the first 2 of the four I rehomed and they lived together at the rescue).
