my poor boy has somehow managed to rip out his entire nail on his back foot :( There was blood everywhere!

I managed to clip the nail off as it was hanging by a thread but it looks so sore.

I have bathed it the best I can but is there anything else I should do? Should it grow back?

I don't think it warrants a vet visit as he's walking around normally and he isn't in pain when I touch the toe.

What with him, and Ellen with her uti and my constant worry over Emma with her bladder problems...

More vibes for my piggies appreciated please xx

My patch has done the same thing before and it does eventually grow back into place, the amount of blood everywhere is misleading, as I called the vet right away and was told to clean it and keep her away from dusty bedding, so if he is on fleece he will be fine!
Best of luck for a speedy recovery!

Thank you. I have cleaned his toe up with salt water. His toe doesn't look swalon or anything, just bloody at the end :( The amount of blood was crazy!

Here's the actual nail, as you can see, it's the whole nail and quick that's been ripped out :(

All you can to is keep it clean and dry and wait. Watch for any signs of infection. If it starts to look dodgy, see the vet for some antibiotics. Poor Edward. Hope it's back to normal soon.

If the bleeding stops within 5-10 minutes, then you need not worry. Please use saline solution to bathe the foot (it is mildly disinfectant). Depending on how much the nail bed is affected, the nail will eventually grow back, but often somehwat thickened or deformed. It is not going to affect his ability to move around once the initial pain has abated.

Thank you. The bleeding thankfully stopped after about 5 minutes and I've bathed it in salt water. He's walking around fine and the toe doesn't look swalon. It just looks so sore :( but he's had some metacam which he lapped up x

Awwww poor Edward! That must have really hurt! If that was me I would be limping around for days it's amazing how piggies can just get on with it isn't it? Yeah I would just make sure you bathe it to keep any infection away best of luck I hope he gets better soon xx

It looks good to me. The danger signs if infection are swelling, redness and heat. Looks like it's healing well. You're doing a great job!

It looks as if its drying up well Claire, just leave it alone and keep a close eye for signs of infection, but as it has a good blood supply (as you know!) it should be fine. Poor little man xx

Can somebody please confirm of this looks ok? The blackness is dried blood but I don't want to go faffing too much.

I've just given it another clean

The blackness from the dried blood around the surviving quick is perfectly normal ay this stage. It is going to flake off at some point. Just leave be. The toe does not look swollen, so there is no injury to it! :)

Thank you. It looks pretty much the same today but no worse. he is currently pop corning around the cage so I'm not too concerned.

I have a feeling he caught it at the top of the ramp as he comes flying down it like a rocket!

I just hope it isn't too uncomfortable for him x
