Well today I went to a garden centre near Carlisle for a coffee with my folks. There was a pet section which I expected to just have toys etc in but they did have live animals as well.
They had little piggies which I am certain were too small to be away from mum as even the just arrived piglets in PAH are usually bigger. I swear one was about the length of my index finger. I was informed they were 7 weeks old. Even worse, there was a dsiclaimer saying there maybe be sexed incorrectly and there was absolutly no hay in the male piggies and rabbit cages and a few dregs in the female cage. No sign of veggies either.

Anyway I asked to speak to someone about the pigs and twenty mintues later someone arrived. Needless to say I was a littl wound up by this point. So i decided to not rant and instead asked them what age they were and what do I feed them. The women said we feed them on excel look you can see the nuggets in their bowls. I then asked do they need anything else and they said yes they need some sort of forage as well. No mention of veggies. Then she said I can get you a care sheet if you like. Is it guinea pigs youd like she asked. Then all hell let loose.
I told her no I had owned piggies for years and I find it odd there is no hay in their cages, I pointed out that this was an rspca guidline to have unlimited hay and I could well have been an officer.
The women had told me from the start that she was filling in and works over at the crockery etc and then after I started my speil she openly admitted she didnt know what they needed it was the pet shops blokes day off.
I said to her that I coulld see the piggies were very lively and healthy and the cages were very clean and the water bottles immaculate but their teeth grow so quickly. I also explained people come into a pet shop and see how their kept and through ignorance think there is nothing wrong with giving them no hay and vegetables when infact hay should be about 80% of their diet. I also explained it will make for healthy piggies and people wont come back complaining when they get ill. I said ( and I had) had watched the female piggies for 20mins scraping over the sawdust searching for the tinyest wee scraps of hay, showing just hwo much they need it and it was unfair especially as soe cages didnt even have any at all.
My mum who's not even fond of piggies stepped in before I had a chance and said will they be getting hay, my daughter is very concerned for there welfare and the women said yes she will do it right now and she did and the wee piggies were so happy.
She said she really had no idea but she has put it in their diary so it has to be actioned daily but even asked me to write a complaint in because thats a sure way to get it fixed as she had heard of a similar issue being raised before. She seemed genuinly concerned, I believed her when she said she was filling in as she came from a different part of the store.
So ok it might not be completly resolved but those wee mini piggies have a better chance and were happily tucking into hay and at least thats one person in the shop that is aware they should have hay and hopefully will keep pointing it out as well.
I took pigtures and will post some soon.

Yes well done, those pigs will be having a great time now. Hopefully the garden centre will sort itself out now x

This is them:
These are the piggies that had "some" hay. Some cages just had the savings and no evidence of any hay what so ever.

Poor guys, they look tiny too :( well done for giving them advice hopefully it will make some difference to their quality of life! If they aren't keeping them properly then there is little hope they are giving out accurate information when people buy them!

Well done - you could always go back for another coffee sometime and see how things are doing.

I could but I'm on holiday at the moment. Ordinarily I'm over two and a half hours away. I will be going back before I leave though.

They do look tiny dont they? Awful small for 7 weeks. One was smaller than the width of a standard food bowl. Especially the little white an dblack fluffy one, shes so so so small :(.

Close, was called haughton hall, just outside carlisle. Perhaps they are the same company? Is hetland similar?

Well done, Hazeyg! I'm so glad you were on hand and weren't afraid to speak up for the piglets! Those poor wee mites! I hate to think what it must have been like for them with no hay! You just want to scoop them up and take them home, don't you?

No sorry I heard they had pets and know its near Carlisle I was just wondering if it was that one. I dont know what the conditions are like at hetland hall.

I did, I wanted to take them all. I said to my mum before I said saything I'm not happy, those poor piggies . My mum said well buy them then, she saw my face and laughed- I was onlyjoking, then she repeated herslef a lot sterner he he! I realise though that they would just be replaced sand it would take more to change things than buy the piggies. I was pleased with the outcome and I hope it makes a difference

Too young to be separated from their mammas!

Recently, I was visiting my local pet store, and was horrified to see that they received atleast twenty Coronet babies that couldn't have been more than 3 weeks old. Although they were not for sale yet, one of the teenagers that worked there put in a huge water bottle (adult) and hung it too high for the little babies to reach. I too had to speak up immediately and also let them know about the hay as well. I love guinea pigs too much for Me to not step in.:(

They should now know better for the next batch of babies. :(

How can people be so stupid as to put a water bottle up too high! :( Just as well you were there that day, Julie!

I live in Carlisle but I've never actually been to Houghton hall (or Dobbies garden centre), I'll have to get a bus there some time and take a look.

Oh please do- I would like to see if they are keeping to their word! How far away from carlisle are you? There a meet up in glasgow shortly if you fancy it?

So, went to Houghton Hall yesterday afternoon and saw these pigs. Unfortunately one of them appeared to have a fungal infection on his face and there was one tiny female that had been isolated and was not for sale and appeared to be pregnant. I spoke to a member of staff and they got the guy for the pet section to come over straight away and he did genuinely seem to care (he said he has 4 pigs at home) and he treated the little boar, put him into isolation, and checked all the others. I asked about the female and he said she'd been brought in as a male and so was on pregnancy watch but he was concerned about the fact she was so young. He also noticed that they were running low on hay and put some more in for them.

I think the problem here is more the general issue of pet shops selling animals and where the animals come from rather than the care of the pet shop itself. There was also a dwarf hamster with a litter of babies and a Syrian that said on the side of the cage that it had been attacked by it's cage mates and was now on it's own. The state of the cages and general care seemed reasonable though, I would have liked to have seen some more toys in some cages (such as the rats).

And on the subject of the Glasgow meet up I would come along but I'm busy that weekend so I can't make it - next time I will!

It's good that the guy understands pigs, having four of his own, and cares about them, but it's far from ideal, isn't it? So glad you're able to keep an eye on things, but it might not be something you're able to do too often...

I hate the idea that people are breeding these wee creatures and then selling them to petshops and the like, where no-one knows what kind of people they'll go to and what kind of care they'll receive. I was in PatH recently and was speaking to the woman on the checkout about how I worry about the animals there and where they're going. She seemed genuinely concerned herself and said that often she tried to explain to parents about what their new purchase would need, but they're not interested. Their kid fancies a guinea pig, so they're getting one. End of story... I worry about these wee creatures and the lives they're going to live. Especially when the kid gets fed up and the parents can't be bothered with all the cleaning out... And especially if they buy only one pig...

I'm so glas you followed up on this. Was the tiny babay balck and dark brwon/ black? Apparently all these babies would now be 8 weeks plus- I find that hard to believe. Perhaps the issue ehre is where they get the piggies from and that the actual guy himself who seems to care.
When I was there the acegs were veyr clean I have to say- its just such a shame the demand for pigs has got the stage where piggies end up in unsuitable homes and are bred back to back that they get diseases like this at such a young age.

The one with the infection was a little black Abby type and the pregnant one was tortie and white (or whatever that is in guinea pig terms). I'm going to go back again at some point soon and see how they are but obviously not much I can do. The whole pet trade is a sad state of affairs.
