A few weeks ago we met up with my sister in law who we don't see often as she does not live near us as the evening went on I mentioned my guinea pigs and she said 'oh we have a guinea pig'.my ears pricked up at once and like all us guinea pig folk started asking all about it.I wish I hadnt:(
It has no name.
They have no idea what sex it is.
It lives alone in a hutch in the garage
It has never had hay only straw.
It has never had fresh veg.
I told her how important hay was and fresh veg and she said she would try but she explained she was given it some time ago and they had no real interest in it so i said it would be best to contact a rescue but she shrugged this off so at the time i left it then twice
since then we have contacted her and mentioned a rescue but to no avail. So today i took the bull by the horns and texted her and asked if we could take it,she texted back at once and said yes she will bring it next week:D I have already set a cage up in our bedroom away from my two am not sure if we will be able to keep this guinea long term as we just have no room but as least we will be able to sort its diet out and have it checked out and it will be out of the situation it was in.And if we can not find it a good home it will stay with us somehow!

My Aspen was in a similar situation when we got her 3 weeks ago :( but 3 weeks on she is like a new Guinea Pig!

Her eyes are brighter, coat shiner, she's more confident and now popcorns all over the place.

Hi Mali's mum thanks for your reply,was Aspen used to hay when you got her? I realise I will have to go very slowly with the veg and changing to nuggerts but will I be able to give unlimited hay from the start?

No Aspen was used to straw and didn't get any veg either :(

I'm not sure if it was the right thing to do but I gave her a 'hay cookie' to start with (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2712...ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108 )

She picked away at it then eventually we got to the stage over a week where she got unlimited hay.

I think if you just introduce everything slowly and make sure there are no tummy upsets, you'll be fine :)
 
Thats so sad :( thank god uve stepped in. It really angers me when people dont know or care how to look after a pet :(
 
Poor piggy - but so lucky that you have found him or her!
 
I would go straight in with unlimited hay, I don't think there is any need to ration it. Small amounts of grass would also be a good introduction to fresh foods. :)
 
Thankyou everyone am sure after i get him/her next week I will be asking for lots of advice.The only thing I do know is its white and not young.
 
Sounds like the little guinea is in for some spoiling when he/she arrives. So glad you have taken little guy in.

Good for you I'm sure the little fella/lady will be as happy as can be with you and I'm sure you will find it a loving family if u can't keep it your a wonderful person xx
 
One thing that does worry me is I don't think this guinea has ever lived in a house and I would imagine that living in a garage it has been quite isolated,although our house is not a noisy as such how does a guinea pig with this background cope with suddenly finding its self in a house for the first time?
 
They will soon get used to it. The poor thing must be so lonely. Do not worry.
 
It's dependant on your space really bedrooms are quietest I find till they settle but maybe he might still feel isolated , it's so hard but I'm sure you will do your very best for the little soul. Good luck keep us all posted on the progress xx

That's really good of you. Is it possible that once you find out what sex it is that you could bond it with yours. That would make it easier for you to keep it.
 
The guinea is coming in the morning she has sent a picture and although its a few years old it looks small but will be able to tell more when I see it. It looks very sweet
 
excellent news that the piggie will be with you soon. I hope everything is ok and it is healthy, have you had a thought about any names? I wouldn't worry too much about having the little thing indoors, I found having a towel, fleece or blanket hanging over the cage/half the cage helped to keep them calm and make them feel safe while they settle in.
 
Haif of me is excited and the other haif is worried sick ,am just praying I have done the right thing as I am still new to the piggy world and hope I can look after one that has been a bit neglected also I worry if its a boy about finding it a home as there seem to be so many boys looking for a home .I would really love to keep it but apart from the two guineas we already have, we have 13 other pets so our house is full .of course I would keep it no matter what if I had to. I think its just nerves kicking in lol:D
 
Do not worry. It is likely she will need a good diet and love and you will be wonderful at providing that.
 
Just read my own post back to myself and told myself off! Of course I will manage we have took neglected animals in for years that's why we have so many :lol!: If am honest its the fact i cant keep it thats is worrying me as i have never not kept an animal i have took in:(

Do not worry, a neglected piggy is not overly different to a looked after piggy. Both want love and food and you are able to provide this. It might just take a little more time for s/he to build their trust in you. I know its early days but if it is a male you could consider neutering to bond with your girls.
