Poor Jack Has A Uti. ...

I sympathise, my little Peanut Buttwr is going through his 2nd UTI. He had a 3 month long one last year that took 3 anti-biotics to clear up.He had Tramadol for pain then. But that vet left the practice & the new one has put him on Metacam, She says it's better because it has an anti-inflammatory effect where Tramadol does not. However, I do not feel it is controlling his pain as well as the Tramadol did & I hate it when he is in pain.It has been a week now & only today did I not hear him squeak in pain when toileting, so hopefully he's better. X-rays & ultra-sound ruled out stones. Still waiting for the lab to get back on the urine culture results.

Oh poor little guy. I hope this isn't going to be too long for Jack it's awful isn't it, and soo expensive but they are worth it xx

It sounds like your boy is in good hands now. Sadly, vet cost can mount up very quickly once you are up against a serious health problem. Good that he is having an x-ray for stones!

Yep they can, my son said he's only a guinea pig, told him it would be different if it was your dog, he shut up at that. He thinks it's false economy to spend on" just a piggie". Wonder if he's my son at all sometimes, he's my piggy and I love him, feel bad I just don't take him to Ashleigh vets first. Didn't have transport so I took him to the nearest I could find, I'll never make that mistake again, believe me. My poor boy was in so much pain. It made me cry such a lot. Just waiting to hear from the vet, it's a long wait xx

Have you tried him on Cystophan or Cystease? Cystophan has really worked well with my guinea pig. It contains glucosamine which is a sugar based substance, which soothes the lining of the bladder. My guinea pig has been on this - half a capsule of powder a day and it has worked wonders - no more squeaking!

He is in the best hands now, don't beat yourself up, you a dedicated piggy slave. let us know what the vets say x

I'm feeling a little better today I think not slept much tho. I phoned the vet Jack is a bit more comfortable now, although he's not pooped at all they think he doesn't want too cos it hurts, he's having some meds to move his gut and an x Ray this afternoon without G A if he'll sit still. He should he's a chilled out guy. See what's happening from there . Poor fella I cried for him last night, he was in so much pain. Thankyou for your concern I really appriciate it be lost without this forum and friends like you :luv: xx

Thanks waiting on the results of the X-ray this afternoon, he's on meds to keep his gut moving cos he's not pooped. May have surgical intervention tomorrow. Cant help wondering if the first vet had took his temperature he may have realised it wasn't an infection? I'm not qualified so I don't know x keep u posted. I'm thankful for forum friends like yourself. Be lost otherwise x

I'm so glad you found something that worked on your piggy, did you discover it yourself or did the vet point you in the right direction xx

I hope he does not need surgery. Thanks for updating us. You must feel sick with worry. X

you know I rang the RSPCA last night out of desperation. They are a wonderful organisation but I do wonder about some things. If they do not treat Guinea pigs because they are an exotic pet, why oh why do they put guinea pigs up for adoption? Doesn't make any sense to me. Surely to help an animal in pain would be most important but just to put them to sleep is all they would do. Odd really . X

I do bad enough can't eat too well at the mo anyway this is making it worse. Surgery is something I don't want to think about. I've never looked after a piggy that way before I'm really worried xx

Kinda worried about Murray now he lost Andy. And I've just bonded him and Jack recently don't know how he gonna react when he comes back, or worse case if Jack doesn't come back at all. Doesn't bear thinking about xx

The vet prescribed Cystophan when he was rushed to the vets crying loudly in pain. Toghether with a short course of Metacam, whilst it was starting to work. It really has worked wonders and he is better now. Another forum member put her guinea pig on Cystease, a similar thing and we were going through the same thing together with our guinea pigs. Both seemed to get better at the same rate and both are now back to full health. I found it really did work wonders. Perhaps you should mention to the vet if it seems to be cystitis and see if they agree to a trial, that it, if they do not find any stones.

Try not to worry about things that have not happened yet. Just deal with what is in front of you right now. X

Thanks will keep it mind. Don't know what we are dealing with yet x

If Jack has not eaten much in the last few days, there not much in the way food for the guts to process. Depending on how active the guts are, it takes 24-48 hours for healthy poos to come through.

Just finished talking with the vet. He hasn't eaten so he's bieng syringe fed on med to get his gut moving, no poops or urine passing but they are expressing his bladder for him . No stones visible on the X-ray . Plan to keep him comfortable and eating again he was fine at home tho so maybe a strange environment he doesn't feel safe so he's not eating.his bladder is big so may need further investigations as to find out what's going on under GA. Poor little man must be feeling stressed I know I am xx I'll keep things posted. I'm trying to b optimistic x

I'm now asking myself when does enough become enough. Poor Jack musnt know what's going on. When do you call a halt for his sake xx

We don't have that kind of stuff here that I can readily buy and am going to ask the vet for it when we consult again after the lab test results are in. However, on @Wiebke 's suggestion, I found vegetarian glucosamine capsules which arrived yesterday & I have started administering 1/8 of the powder to PB straight away. I had to order them online. Checked all the chemist & health food stores around here & they only had tablet form.

So sorry you & Jack are going through this. Unfortunately only you can answer that question. I went through agony myself before I finally decided to put my 4th pooch to rest back in the late 1980's. I still cry when I think of her..

Personally, I would give it at least another day and see whether he is picking up or not. If he still can't pee and poo on his own by tomorrow, I would call it quits, but at least you have given him a good chance. In some ways, it is easier when it happens at home as you then know better the moment when it becomes too much or if Jack is still hanging in there and fighting.

It is one of the most gutting decisions and it is very difficult to make. It has to feel right for Jack as well as for you and your financial possibilities, especially as it comes so hard on the heels of another loss. Speak with your vets about their honest view on Jack's quality of life and chances for a recovery. The line is different for each of us and there is no right or wrong in these situations as long as you make your decision based on your love and with his wellbeing in mind, so you can live with it in the long term.

HUGS

If you feel that enough is enough and you feel that Jack is suffering then that is your right to make that decision. It does not matter what anyone else thinks, just you and your vet. Ask them what his prognosis is and ask them to be honest with you. It may be that he is making progress and you will want to keep trying for him. I'm thinking of you x

I agree with above, ask the vets what they believe his prognosis to be and go from there, you know him best at the end of the day.

I am thinking of you and Jack. Shirley you are doing all you can for Jack. After you have spoken to the vet you will have a decision to make. You will do whatever is in Jack's best interest I know you will.
