hi guys. poor little jim has pnuemonia 8... it's come on so suddenly, he was fine yesterday, but i went to feed the boys this morning and he didn't come out to me, so i lifted his bed up and he was just laid there with runny eyes, i picked him up and he was really floppy. i took him straight to the vet who said it's pneumonia, he's had a shot of anti biotics and steriods, and i'm taking him back tomorrow for another shot. he's really in a bad way :( his chest is really rattley and his breathing is shallow. but there's nothing to do now but wait :(

he hasn't eaten all day, and he wont drink either. i have some critical care in from when my mums pigs were ill, but his breathing is so bad do i risk syringe feeding? i really don't want to try force anything down him and risk him choking :...

fingers crossed for jim please guys, it's not looking good :(

Mega healing vibes for Jimbo, I lost my Bella to pneumonia, it's not nice. :(

I am so sorry your baby is unwell. I really hope he gets better soon.

Did the vet prescribe some Furosemide for him? It helps clear the fluid on the lungs. I am sorry to hear he is so poorly, I hope he pulls through x

I'm sorry he is so unwell, am going through the same thing with my Buzz at the moment, he is on diuretics daily, Septrin, and Bisolvon but the vet has agreed to start him on Zithro-max as the Septrin has not worked, it did clear it but it came back a day or so after the course stopped.

There is a particular strain of pneumonia doing the rounds at the moment which is resistant to the usual antibiotics. I would definitely ask your vet for frusemide (diuretic) at least and maybe mention Zithro-max if the antibiotics he's on don't help.

thank you everyone x>>

no he just gave him a shot of antibiotic and steriods and said i could either take some baytril home or come back for another shot tomorrow which would be more effective, so i said i'd go back. he's not on any diuretic so i will definately ask for some, thank you.

there's no improvement, still wont eat or drink anything, and i've tried him with allsorts of his fave veggies and fruits :( i don't hold out much hope for him making it through the night. he hasn't moved out of his bed all day, i'm trying to leave him alone now to get some rest, fingers crossed for him :( x

i hope little buzz gets better soon. thanks for the advice, i'll definately make sure i get some diaretics tomorrow when i go back.
my vet told me it wasn't contagious, and i had jim in quarantine, but bob seemed to be worrying about jim and looking for him so i've put him back in the cage with him. bob's a really old man so i really don't want to risk him catching it. what do you think? should i seperate them again? x

Personally I've never separated poorly piggies, the ill one pines for the other one & I think it can make them depressed. It's a risk you have to weigh up what's best for them both really. If you do lose him, his friend will be with him right up to the end & that can help with the acceptance of loss. Hopefully it won't come to that though.

Sending him lots of positive vibes tonight x

As you are going back to the vet tomorrow you will need to persuade them to give the diuretic frusemide. An inection tomorrow would be best but thereafter there is an oral liquid version called frussol tha you can be given for syringing. The dose rate for a poorly piggie with substantial fluid on the lungs would be to start off at a high dose - 8-10mg/kg twice daily for 2-3 days and then drop down to 2-4mg/kg for another few days. By this time, the antibioitics shouuld be doing their stuff. You do need to watch out for signs of dehydration and be prepared to syringe fluids (including diarolyte rehydration fluid - available from most supermarkets)

More and more vets are becoming aware that frusemide diuretic can be a life saver for pneumonia piggies.

Given the right drugs and intensive support form yourself in terms of keeping food and fluids going into your piggie at regular intervals (20-30ml of food every 3-4 hours and 5-10ml fluid every 1-2 hours) it is possible for a piggie to recover. You need to weight daily and observe poo output - if poos become very small or stop then gut stimulants may also be necessary. It sounds like a lot of drugs but what you are doing is supporting your piggie through the acute phase of the infection and keeping them going until the anitbioitics get a chance to work.

Lastly - infections can be spread....especially respiratory ones. Contagious means spreading by touch only. Infections can be spread by other routes - minute water droplets/nasal secretions in the air for instance - which is the most common way a respiratory infection spreads. Given the speed and severity of this one I strongly recommend you either separate them or treat them both with anitbiotics if you intend keeping them together. Observe strict hygeine measures if you have other pigs and also watch out for bullying with your bonded pair - in the wild sick animals are forced out and away from the herd.........

HTH - fingers and paws crossed.

thanks for all the advice and good vibes guys.

i'm afraid jim has passed away :( it was very peaceful, he just went to sleep.

i'll keep a really close eye on bob and if he shows the slightest sign of illness we'll be straight to the vet and i've written notes of all the meds you guys have recommended so i'll be going armed with demands! haha!

R.I.P jim 8...

I'm really sorry to hear that Jim has passed away, run free little piggie x

A similar thing happened to one of my boys Oreo (see profile pic) last year. I wish I had known about the medication options then :(

hugs and thoughts x

So sorry to hear this. I have just lost a rabbit and guinea pig to it. Frantically watching my other pig! Sending you a hug! x

I'm really sorry to hear that Jim has lost his fight. From what I have heard this particular strain of pneumonia comes on extremely quickly and kills within a day or so. Night night little Jim. Hope his friend is ok.

Ohhhh I'm so so sorry little jimmy is unwell lots of hugs, chin tickles and healing vibes from here x

Really sorry for your loss, huge hugs to you

RIP Jim

I am so sorry about Jim, it did sound very serious, there really wasn't anything else you could have done though :(

Keep a close eye on Bob, I doubt whether he will have caught the same thing, but check him a couple of times a day for any respiratory noises, sneezing/sniffles/runny eyes etc. At least he was with Jim at the end, he will be more accepting of his loss xx

Sorry to hear about this - my Parkin died last month from a uri/pneumonia too, despite all the drugs we could push into him. Sometimes it just happens, but very sorry for your loss. Run free at the bridge, little one!
