Poor Judge Dredd

I joined here a few weeks ago and have been enjoying reading about everyone and their Guineas.. I love mine to bits..

Unfortunately my first post is a sad one.. 8...

I have just gone to feed my 3 female piggies and found that Judge Dredd* had died.. She was 1.5 years old, showing no symptoms, was eating and drinking fine this morning and playing with my other 2..

They live in the house now (and have been for about a month) in a big indoor cage and I havent noticed anything wrong with her at all 8... I'm totally at a loss as to what happened to her..

* I know it's not a girly Guinea Pig name but she was such a scruffy piggy with wiry hair all different lengths that I fell totally in love with her as soon as I saw her..
 
Welcome to the forum, I am so sorry to hear of your very sudden loss.

Such a death happens *fairly* often - while it's not exactly as common as deaths through illness or old age, it's far from unheard of. The suspected cause when there have been no prior symptoms is usually heart failure or heart attack - you couldn't have done anything to prevent the problem.

I'm so sorry for you, I know how hard this is. As Laura-CCC4 said, I suspect it's been heart failure/attack. I had a very lively pig who died in a very similar way one night at only 1.5 years right in front of me - he was very healthy and had just been running around and chewing at my feet as usual, then suddenly had a 'fit' and went. Sadly there wont have been anything you could've done.

Just try to think on the fact that she went very quickly and didnt suffer at all and that you gave her a fun and loved life - thats the most important thing.

Hope your other girls are doing ok and giving you all the cuddles you need right now

I am so sorry that Judge Dredd has left you so suddenly. Sadly heart attacks happen, even in younger guinea pigs.

You must feel so devastated! Please do not think that it was your fault or that there was anything that you did wrong.

RIP a very much loved and missed girl
 
Thank you for all your kind words.. I just can't believe she's gone.. She was always the one with her nose pressed against the cage when it was feeding time and first in the veggies and fruit.. I knew something was wrong as soon as I opened the cage and she didn't rush out to see what I was putting in their food bowl..

She was beautiful. It is hard to adjust when you lose a pig, my sympathies are with you entirely.

In the next three weeks I'm facing the first anniversary of the loss of two of my pigs, and although I've accepted that they've gone and I've made my peace with it, the memories will always be there and I still wish that they were still here.

It will take time but your heart will heal and you'll be able to remember her with a smile or a laugh, thinking of all the happy times you shared. xx
 
Oh I'm so so sorry to hear of your loss BladeRider. It hasn't even been a month since I lost my little Taylor who was only 3 years. She was the first Guinea Pig of mine to pass away and it was awful.

I can completely sympathise with you. Its horrible for the first few days, but after a couple of days I found myself starting to think of it from a point of view that, there was nothing I could have done, and at the end of the day, I gave her a spoiled rotten life. She was loved, she had lots of time in the run, she had lots of her favourite foods on a regular basis, and I gave her the best life I possibly could. Hopefully in a few days you'll start thinking that way too.

I'm now in the process of getting 5 new guinea pigs (only went to the breeder to get 2 new ones, one male friend for my Phoenix and a friend for my girl to "replace" Taylor) and my partner came with me and decided to get 2 females and a male! We've decided we're going to try breeding, we know what we're doing and its something I've always wanted to do but never had the time or space to do it. Now I do, so I'm gonna!

Its certainly helped me move on with regards to Taylor, though she'll never be forgotten, and always loved, I know she's in a safe place.
