Hi Everyone!

My poor little Tom has had it pretty rough lately! I noticed his ear was a little bit flakey on Tuesday and decided to apply a little bit of oil and check it in the morning to see if it was dry skin.

After checking it yesterday morning it was much flakier and had a little sore, my first thought was mites so I booked an appt. with the vet next Thursday (It was the soonest appt I could get.)

Now checking him this morning I've found a rather hard lump on his back right leg about the size of 2 peas! And to accompany it, the poor thing has chipped both of his bottom teeth right off to the gum! Along with his top left tooth! I don't know whats been going on with the little guy! I'm also now suspecting fungal as he now has two little sores on his ear, one on the top of his ear and one just below his ear. They are quite small, but still a cause for concern.

My other piggy Jerry is in perfect health. He has clear eyes, very healthy teeth, no sores or dandruffy skin, even his ears and nose are perfectly clear.

I rang the vet again half an hour ago to inquire if I could get a sooner appt. explaining that my piggy seems to be deteriorating! They said they were fully booked and understaffed at the moment so I would have to wait until next Thursday! :( Talk about stressful!

I can only hope the poor thing doesn't get any worse as this is the only vet in my area. If he does seem to be lethargic, withdrawn or displaying any more symptoms I have rang the vets located an hour away and they said I could bring him in on Saturday at 1pm (their earliest appt) to be checked.

I've been following a very strict vegge, pellet and hay diet with occasional treats to ensure my piggies get enough vitamin c, calcium etc. So I can't think of anything wrong with his diet. And if there was, I'd think Jerry would be displaying symptoms?

Do any of you have any recommendations of what to do before I can make it to the vets? To stop him from worsening? I'm letting him rest at the moment so I haven't gotten any photos to upload.

Thanks, Emm

Oh how exciting! I just got a call back from the vets here and have made a 4:30pm appointment!

Thanks anyway Julesie :) Really nice of you to comment.

You have some beautiful little munchkins I see in your avatar! :)

Poor little pig, it definitely sounds like he has a fungal problem going on-your description sounds like what my Piglet had when he had ringworm. As for the lump on his leg, you'll need the vet to give you a diagnosis, but abcesses aren't uncommon in guinea pigs, so it could be an option to consider. Also while it's not good his teeth broke off, it's good to know that they will grow back, as their teeth grow constantly. Good luck with the vet, and keep us updated!

Thanks everyone for your feedback! :) Popcorning Piggy, he hasn't had any issues with Jerry. Jerry is the dominant one but they've been happy together and eat out of the same food bowl (but I do have 2 in the cage just in case) they generally cuddle up to each other in the cuddle cup I made them.

I'm off to the vets in about 15 minutes so I'll let you know. Thanks Piglet and Rogers mumma, definitely good to know! :)

Hey everyone! Tommy is just fine, she took a skin scraping from his ear and there was no mites or fungus, she put a few drops of bededine on his ear and its already looking better. As for his leg she thinks he must have broken it when we was very very little and its healed in a peculiar way, I just have to monitor it, it doesn't seem to be bothering him for now. :)) very happy owner ATM.
