ive just rang the vets,he did a tiny wee so I'm going keep trying give him a lot of fluids to flush out his bladder..he still hasn't pooed since before his op yesterday but he hasnt eatten much just the mushed Burgess I'm giving him so going try hard with that today..

The vet said he had major surgery and some guinea pigs do better than others and they think its poss it has knocked him for 6,and he was under for a while she said..she also said its normal for him to have a lot of pain and its poss there is another small stone but they did give his bladder a few good flushes..

Ive got to keep a close eye on him today and if I'm still worried he can go back at 4pm but they will need to pass a catheter again and poss open him back up:(

also when he is weeing it smells really really strong?/?/

Also i have some of the gut stimulant is it worth giving him some of this laura?
 
I really hope he'll be ok, the fact that he's peeing is good, his digestion may well be affected by the anaesthetic so it may take a day to really get his guts going at a normal rate again.

I'd have to say re the gut stimulant (metaclopromide?), ask the vet if you are seriously considering giving him any. Personally, if I was in charge of a piggie in this situation, provided he doesn't get worse I would get some good syringe-feeds and fluids into him and give him the day to start pooping by himself, if he's still not pooping by later this afternoon then I'd look into whether a gut stimulant would be worthwhile to kick-start things again. Remember though I'm not qualified and experienced enough in this problem to say for certain what the "best" routes to take may be, so it's more important you follow your instincts and the vets at the moment.
 
thanks laura i will try getting him going by himself via me sringe feeding him and wait until tonight to see if he needs gut meds but i will ask the vet first..

I was just thinking after i had my c-section last year when i peed the pain i got in my bladder was horrid and it WAS hard to wee with out pushing hard so I'm thinking maybe some of this is down to that and lack of feeling in the bladder with it been messed with ...

Could be worth doing for a day or two, may help pick him up as he gets over his anaesthetic, especially if he won't take plain water too easily.

Morning claire been thinking of you and Buff overnight hope you got some sleep and little fella.Just keep on with plenty fluids bladder surgery is painful as it can cause spasm and this just needs time to settle.Lots of reassurance warmth and fluids with analgesia.Peanut is better today eating and maybe it was just me fretting because i had been away from him for a week.
Today is the 1st anniversary of Sweetie passing away, still miss her but it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all x).Hope day goes ok keep me posted

he has just started to poo a little about the size of mouse droppings..

i have the stone here in a tub i thought they were hard but this one is soft and squidgy,is that how they all are?
 
Thank goodness for the poop!

I think the size is to be expected? Once he eats and drinks more then it may get all back to normal. Keep up the metacam and make sure his pain relief doesn't wear out. Hopefully that will encourage the eating, drinking and pooping. Well done to you and Buff so far. xxxxx

So sorry to hear about what poor Buff has been through, (well, and you too). So glad he's out of the op and home now.

As for the whimpering when trying to wee, I experienced this quite recently with my little Daisy (in April just gone). She had a complete hysterectomy and stone in bladder removed. I've never looked after piggies before and this was quite worrying indeed.

Daisy suffered the same as Buff when trying to do the first wee and I think it was a good 12 hours before she started to wee. She also wheeked and cried and just did a dribble to start with. (Plus, she very rarely drank water). She persevered though without any help from myself, but when I learnt of the cranberry juice from the lovely girls on here, I started to syringe as many mls of that into her, diluted with water, as often as I could. This helped tremendously and she passed wee more frequently and it was less blood stain (the stain you get from after the op).

Along with the Metacam, this all seemed to work nicely. Sounds like Buff is in a lot of pain, poor dab, but I think once he has the right amount/appropriate pain relief, he will feel better. It's like us when we are in pain, or have had an accident and try to do something for the first time, we're always a bit apprehensive and frightened to do it and the pain makes it worse too.

Sorry I can't help any further medically wise, but I rooting for Buff all the way. xx
 
Poor Buff :-(

I sympathise completely, one of my boys has been suffering with bladder problems since Easter - two bladder stone operations in one month and now desperately trying to prevent another.

From my experience squeaking for a good few days after the operation is normal, even with Metacam. Keep up with the feeding and the fluids.
 
Hi Claire, sorry only just seen the poor little man's story.
I would defo keep on with the metacam as everyone says, and maybe try syringing some critical care down him(certainly got my Teddy eating after his stone op). If he's not pooing well then he would benefit from some metoclopramide. Get plenty of fluids down him too.:)

Poor Buff. I'm glad there are poos now, even small ones. Best wishes to him from me and healing wheeks from the girls.
 
Hang in there! I'm sure you're doing a wonderful job, doing all you can to nurse him through this. Still keeping my fingers crossed that his condition improves x
 
Just checking in to see how Buff is doing today. Glad to hear he is a little brighter, you are doing a cracking job, stick with it and hopefully each day will see a little improvement.

Definitely stick with the Metacam, a piggy in pain will not eat. Are you offering Buff a probiotic i.e. Biolapis or similar, if he is on antibiotics these may be making him feel yucky and reduce his appetite. Another thought, what about giving him some Metatone (tonic) which can sometimes increase appetite.

Fingers crossed for the little guy, I know exactly what you are going through at the moment.
 
hi he had 1 bite of lettuce last night but other then that he isnt intrested in any thing :(

he is having biolapis and I'm going to try him with oxbow recovery today hoping this will kick start him to eat,he is also on a gut stimulant 3 times a day.

at the mo he isnt facing the wall in his cage now but hiding under a blanket with a little friend i have put in with him..

He still cries when he wees but not as much as the first day.x
 
he has had a bit of recovery and is at the mo still under his blanket..

Debedee liked him and had a look at his wound for me and she said it looks really nice,she loved buff,but he is irresistible though:))

does anyone have any tips for me to try and get buff to eat,i have tried,lettuce,carrot,cucumber,Burgess pellets,recovery,hay,readigrass,grass,tomato..

and still he shows no signs of wanting to eat or drink i just dont know what else to try i have been giving him syringe feeds every 2 or 3 hours too with recovery and Burgess excel blackcurrant and oregano, fluid feeds of water and biolapis, and cranberry juice I'm so at a loose end:(:(:(

I know this probably sounds an obvious one, but have you tried offering him grass/dandelions? Stanley isn't normally a huge grass eater (never heard of in a piggy before!) but yesterday I gave my lot some cut grass whilst I syringe fed him, I then offered him some grass and he tucked in - first proper thing he has eaten since his surgery.:)

I have found in the past that when my lot have been ill they generally go for the veggies first, pellets seem to be the last thing they want to eat. What about trying him on some baby food? Try syringing a little in first so he gets the taste and then put some of a small plate/bowl. What about water in a small bowl too, not ideal but worth a try?

Am keeping everything crossed for you here - I know just how exhausting round the clock syringe feeding/medical care is!

some great news

He is eating on his own:o:o:o:o:o:(|):(|)

after his surgery i changed him from his normal food to burgess excel pellets but thought i may just put in his old food that he had before,this was yesterday,well ive just caught him eating some museli,so i have given him so cucumber and he even came up to the bars and had it off me and is at the mo tucking into it..

i did try him with grass yesterday but he was still not intrested,but i so hope this is a break through:...
