Peanut has been squeaking when weeing today, tonight we took him to the vet. We couldn't see our usual exotics vet as it was an emergency appointment so we saw a general vet. I collected a urine sample this afternoon and took it with us nothing showed up on the strip test. He had an xray, no stones showed up. He's had bloods taken with a wiff of gas and a painkilling injection. Came home and checked the forum to find the bupremorphine she gave him can slow guineas guts so now I'm worried! He nibbled a bit of hay but he's not interested in food at the moment. He feeels cold, I've put a snuggle safe in the cage near where he is sitting and the heating is on. I've syringed him 1ml of water with the powder of a catease capsual mixed in it. We also have Protexin Bio Lapis to mix with water 2g mixed with 50mls of water syringed through out the day. I've not given him any of that yet as he has just had the Catease. Blood results due back saturday.
Thoughts on diagnosis is IC due to stress of vet visit last week and the loss of Willow. None of the guineas have been happy this last week, all three are very quiet.
Is there anything else I should look out for, anything I can do for him

Get well soon Peanut. It must be going about as my Peanut also was squeaking when weeing.

Aww, hope your Peanut gets well soon.
Thanks he's just finished an 8 day course of antibiotics. Can't remember the name but it's a pill you crush with water and give 1/4 tablet daily. He was squeaking a wee bit this morning and if it continues he's off to vet again Saturday. Hope your Peanut is better soon too.

My girl was okay on buprecare but she was more sleepy and dopey which is a side effect, I rely on metacam mainly and only used the buprecare for emergencies or very bad crying and pain. Hope he gets well soon I know the stress of bladder probs all too well! Tempt him with treats and extra water is always good to flush through possible bladder sludge x

Thank you for that @WinnieandBear, good to know your sow was okay. He's been really dopey all evening after eating a little hay when he first got back in his cage he didn't eat at all. He's had some of the gut stimulant and I've just given him some critical care, he licked it off a spoon, so looking better at least he's had something. He's also taking syringed water, he wont touch the water bottle, I've tried putting a different type in a new position on the cage in case he associates the water bottle with giving him pain.

Poor wee Peanut! It’s true that analgesia causes them to be a bit more sleepy but at least he has nibbled hay and you given him Critical Care. Is he pooping ok? Keep up the gut stimulant too.

Sorry IPad misbehaving! Didn’t mean to send 3 replies! Love to Peanut.

The vet said to keep up the gut stimulant for five days, as it's mixed with water he's also getting extra fluid. If I think he needs more I've got supplies in my first aid box so I can carry on. He did five poops on my lap when I gave him the critical care so guts are still working! I feel so sorry for him he's such a scaredy pig at the best of times. Last time I take him for a routine health check, it made him ill!

Please be aware that the symptoms at the very onset of a UTI or IC acute bout can be very inconsistent. You can have red pees that do not register any blood and the next pee can be clear but rate high on blood content...

Just keep any eye on him, weigh him daily and if necessary offer him top up syringe feed to help keep the guts going. See your exotics vets when the symptoms become clearer and more consistent. I have been there myself and played this game... :mal:

Thank you @Wiebke. I'll be keeping a close eye on him. I put white vetbed in the main wee corner when he started squeeking so I can spot blood more easily. I'm staying around the piggys even more than usual at the moment keeping an eye on lonely Bracken. He's not a lap pig but he seems to perk up when I sit beside his cage knitting and chating to him. I tried putting Spike and Peanut's cage next to his but he goes mad biting the bars and pulling at them. I fear for his teeth, so they are back above him!

I can’t help with anything medical related just thought I would add that I hope peanut feels better soon.

Thanks @gizzy, yes to the first question. I've got fibreplex in my first aid box but thought I'd better use the Bio Lapis the vet gave me.
Peanut didn't really eat much when we got home and has slowly declined. I was up all night with him syringing critical care every two hours along with the Bio Lapis. I think this is a reaction to the painkiller. Vet ringing tomorrow with blood results so hopefully we will know more then. I can only get him to take 2 or 3 mil of cc at a time so wondering if I should give it more often. I'm loath to handle him too much, he's such a timid pig and hates humans. I think this has all come about because he had a general health check last week and got upset being in the vets

Hi Sue, how is he now? One sick piggy after the other. Did you try the Fibreplex? I use this as it’s a measured dose each time so I felt reassured that they got a good amount. I used this in between the Critical Care and water. Hope you are managing some rest?. X

Thank you everyone.
He's doing okay, a little bit brighter but nowhere near right. I'm using the stuff the vet gave me as it's mixed with water so it's one less syringe to give him. He really doesn't like being messed with! He's lost 40gm in 24hrs. I really thought I was losing him in the night he was so lethargic. They obviously knew what that painkiller was going to do as they gave me the probiotic, they said sprinkle the cystease on a treat and he would eat it. He's not eating so I've mixed it with water and syringed that as well. I wish I'd not taken him for that health check last week, poor boy was so stressed. What with that and losing Willow, I think piggy's and humans are all stressed up and showing it in different ways. He's just had 5mls of cc so fingers crossed I can get him through this.

Don't want to speak to soon but .....
He's in the hay loft munching away looking bright eyed and bushy tailed. He's had a green bean and a slice of cucumber. He looks a right mess CC all down his front and boar glue on his back where Spike's obviously been taking advantage of his weakness. I'll give him the probiotic later and finish up the CC that's mixed, hopefully I won't need to syringe feed him much more.

That's really good he's had some hay and CC, don't panic too much about the water bottle as the CC will be hydrating and you can also try syringing water if you think it's needed, what I like to do is flavour it with some cucumber pulp/juice before syringing it to the pigs and then they are more keen X

I remember the nights I sat up with my Willow Very tiring and stressful.xx Will be thinking of you during the night. Xx

Peanut's blood results came back today. Everything clear :yahoo:. He's eating some hay and nuggets but is off veggies. I've scaled back CC today and unless he starts losing weight dramatically won't give him more. He now has Meloxicam for a week, I am to continue the cystease and probiotics.
Spike huddled in the corner of the cage and refused all veggies. I put him and Peanut in the run while I cleaned the cage out, gave them a slice of pepper and some grass. Spike came out of the hidey picked up a piece of pepper and gave it to Peanut, dropped it then pushed it in front of him with his nose, he was then putting his nose under Peanuts tummy and slightly lifting him. I was in tears watching this. I think he was on hunger strike cause his buddy was ill. I gave them both some CC and probiotics.
I went shopping and got lots of their favourite veg the are both eating a bit now. Sorry I didn't update thread earlier, it's been a busy day catching up with errands. Will give Peanut his meds late tonight and go to bed. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end.

Oh! That’s marvellous! It’s so so endearing when you are privy to such signs of affection between two little friends! I’m so pleased for you. Have a good nights sleep. Xx
