My poor little girl. My neighbour Natalie came round to hold the piggies for me while I cut their nails this afternoon. It was the first time I'd cut Penny's, her nails were quite long and I took a little piece of and it started pouring with blood! She's got jet black nails and the quick must of been so long!
It took ages to stop bleeding, I held a tissue on to put pressure on it, tried a styptic pen, still no good. In the end Natalie said to put salt on which I'd never heard of before and was worried it would sting but at a last resort after 10 minutes of bleeding I tried it and it did the trick.
Has anyone ever heard or done this before?

Penny was so good bless her. I don't think it bothered her at all as she didn't make a squeak and just sat there licking my finger.
The way she popcorned round her house when I put her back in I'd say it wasn't hurting.
Just gave me such a shock! We decided to leave the rest of her nails till tomorrow. I've only ever caught Bob's nail once before and it stopped bleeding straight away with a styptic pen.
I'm really hesitant about doing them now.
Note to self - only adopt piggies with clear nails in future!

Aw, poor Penny.

I caught Pixel's nail last time and felt really bad. She didn't actually seem that bothered and was more interested in the parsley I was bribing her with though! rolleyes

Aw this is not your fault. It happens to us all. Penny was fine and that is the main thing. I have not heard of salt on the cut as I thought it would sting. I use flour.

This happened when I did my Phoebes nails before and she had clear nails. I was told by vet to put nail into a bar of soap although that didn't work very well. I have also heard to dip nail into some flour and its supposed to stop it bleeding.

My Matilda is all black and I have nipped her skin so many times during nail clipping....I'm sure Penny has forgotten all about it now....:)

Thats happened to use a few times. Dexters one bled for ages. We have a powder we put on them and it stops it bleeding and helps against infection and stuff.

I never cut my piggies nails, my bf has too. I get really faint feeling when's doing it, just turns my stomach. :))

Dustin's front 2 paws are black nails, we now hold him under a light and its easier to see how far to cut.

I've done that and omg it makes you feel so bad!

Salt is great by the sounds of it - and flour too great idea.

Yes black nails, cut a teeny tiny bit each time they freak me out!

This happened to Maisy one of my piggie's, but her nail fell off instead but when rang the vets they said to put superglue on it! :/
But it did stop bleeding after a while and Maisy's white so it made it worst, I always have them swob things in from Pets @ Home!

You're right it makes you feel so bad! She's definately none the worse, she's playing kiss chase with Gerry and charging round.
She got an extra big piece of carrot to say sorry.

Awwww, poor thing and poor you! I dread the day I nic a nail... I'm sure she enjoyed the extra bit of carrot :))
