As some of you may know I got a guinea pig from a petstore due to the fact that the way she was being kept was inadequate.
I got her today and the store assistant health checked her, he said she was fine and put her in the box.
I am currently doing an extended diploma in animal management so I decided to check her over just to be sure.
She has scabs all around her mouth, I'm pretty sure this is down to her poor diet, she also has a scab on her inner leg, that looks like it is a fighting wound.
She also has a bit of a watery eye from where she panicked when she was in her carry cage and probably poked her eye with some hay because I know for a fact that it was fine before.
I'm so disappointed that petstores can keep guinea pigs like this and then sell them on when they are not in the best of shape! mallethead
She is gorgeous though! drool

Hi,
Sounds like she has quite a few problems.
If it was me I would pop her along to the vets for a healthcheck on all these issues to be safe,
Looking forward to pictures of her when you get the chance,
x

Poor piggy, at least she will be well taken care of now :) I'd take her to the vet about the scabs, in case she has some kind of fungal infection or parasites.

turns out there was more than one scab, and she was infested with mites! so i have treated her with invermectin.
after showing her to a cavy savvy person it turns out shes only 3 weeks old! the poor little thing.

Three weeks old and in a pet shop? That is so sad!

I hooe she starts to get better soon! Lots of wheeky healing vibes from me and my piggles!

I hope that poor things gets better soon! Please bill the pet store for the treatment - hurting them in the pocket is the best way we have to forsce them to clean up their act!

thank you all! :)
i just got off the phone with the petstore, he said he will talk to the breeder who he gets the piggies off and alert her.
he also said she was definetly 8 weeks old because thats what the breeder says! even though we had already established the breeder wasnt any good!
he did however say that if i had taken her back he would have treated her, but i live far away and its usually his son looking after the shop.
but at least he has said he will treat all of the other guinea pigs.
but he said he would do it with spot on? is this safe for young piggies? especially if they are only 3 weeks old?
jess.

Spot on! OMG- what is this man talking about! These piggies are tiny, a full cat/dog dose of that is going to knock them for 6!

Did you notice the condition of any other animals there? If it is generally poor, I think the RSPCA and/or your local council should be informed.

I had no idea until I joined this forum what horrendous conditions piggies are kept in. I don't know how these heartless people can breed these beautiful little creatures only to not care less what happens to them. I am so mad right now.

I hope your piggie pulls thorugh and makes a full recovery. Thank goodness she ended up in the hands of someone like you and not some parent who gave in to their kids 'wants' and dumped her in a cage to never be properly checked.

:( poor little thing. So pleased you took her to a vet and she is being looked after now. I would speak to the vet about safe doses etc for the mites (although they should have done that at your appointment). Keep us updated on her progress :)

i didn't get a good look at the other animals apart from a few baby boars but they weren't as bad as poor little minnow.
i will go back and check this weekend, generally the shop was ok, it was just my little minnow and the baby boars that were bad.
i hate people who breed and own guinea pigs for money and not their love for the gorgeous piggies, it makes me so angry!

thank you :) i will keep you all updated. not to worry the dosage was tiny, she behaved so well when he gave it her too, bless her.

How disgusting that the breeder could sell a three week old guinea pig and how did the pet shop not know she had mites? That is serious neglect. I hope you report them and something can be done. Thank goodness you have rescued her and can give her a happy life. Poor little baby.

I wish there could bo some kind of campaign to stop animals being sold from pets shops and that all pets should come from licenced breeders. When I was in Japan I remember going in to a pet shop and seeing puppies kept in cages smaller than what my piggies live in. Thank god the UK has banned the sale of dogs and cats from pets shops.
