Rodney is 2 years old and was absolutely fine until Friday night when we found him in a bad way. He'd had some sort of stroke or attack and we thought he was dead at first. He was hardly moving and felt very stiff. He drank some water and ate a little bit of cucumber overnight, I'd also noticed his mouth was turned up at one side.

We took him to the vet first thing yesterday. He can't use his back legs at all and is very very wobbly. The vet was v nice and said he didn't want to put him to sleep just yet because when he tried moving Rodney's legs, he was making an effort to move them back and so he thought there might be hope. He did seem a bit more alert.

He was given an anti-inflammotory jab and the vet told us to wait til Monday. If he moves a bit better and his appetite comes back more we shouldn't put him to sleep.

But he seems to have gone downhill again. He won't eat and is hardly moving.

Having read Peter Gurney's book, I've tried Osteocare on the off chance that it would help but I don't think it is going to do anything and I'm really reluctant to give it to him now. He's not even making any effort to move his mouth when I feed it to him :(

I'm not really asking for advice here because I think I know what is best for him. Just wondered if this has happened to others? It has really shocked me how he could deteriorate like that overnight :(

How awful for you, I'm sorry to hear about Rodney. It does sound very much like a stroke, poor love.

Maybe continue with the calcium for now and see if that has any effect, PG says it helps with Paralysis. Maybe just keep him warm try and get some critical care or mashed up pellets in him and water too.

Thinking of you both. I know how awful it is to see them go down hill so quickly. x

Continue with the calcium. Some people have used it for a couple of weeks before they see a difference. Hand feed him and syringe him water if he cannot feed or drink for himself. Give extra vitamin c for about a week to help give him a boost. Half a chewable vitamin c tablet once a day. Keep him warm. Where he's not moving around much his back legs may have problems with circulation. Massage his legs 2-3 times daily - again will help circulation and gently stretch his back legs out if not painful for him. I had this problem happen to my sow. She was 8 at the time and she never recovered however I nursed her and she lived another 6 months pain free. Hope things improve :)

Woohooo

I have just heard that Rodney, who was on death's door a few nights ago, is now walking and eating and purring.... how wierd!

Not there to see him tonight but am looking forward to seeing him tomorrow.

I guess the Osteocare stuff must do really good things...!?!

Osteocare

Rodney is indeed better now! Just wondered if anyone has opinions as to how long to keep the Osteocare up for? P.G website says 3 days but it didn't cure him straight away. and he seems to really like the taste of it :))
