:'(Have been to the Royal Norfolk Show today ,and wasn't going to,but my son was insistent,so went to the small breed tent ,all these tiny cages with such sad looking piggies and buns! >:( :'(,no hay at all ,just sawdust!I asked one of the judges how long they would be left in the cages,he was very off with me and claimed they were happy and their owners would be collecting at allotted times ? :-XWho knows how long that was?Poor little things...sx

I wouldn't be able to go to something like that - would just make me too sad and play on my mind :'( :'(

Poor bunnies & piggies :'( :'(

when the island have thier little shows they do have hay and always have food like cucumber and carrot in there , the box cage type thing are smallish but i do see owners cuddling them , but i guess thats how show pigs are trreated and are more then likely used to it , most of them are asleep or looking bored stiff

yeah it's awful i entered iowa in to a show once and i stupidly agreed to entrust him to the man he was running it and he said he would be well looked after etc i sent iowa in his own cage so he would have plenty room but you know how you get a feeling somethings wrong i couldn't settle so thought i would check on him i was so flipping angry at what i saw :tickedoff:
here is iowa in a 2ftx2ft "cage" no sawdust no hay and barely any water i ended up causing i right scene when i bundled him cage and all into the back of my car and took him home thank God he was only there a few hours unlike the others who had to stay like that all day.

i tend to boycott all highland shows and animal shows now.

aaww no!  :( I've never been able to go to a show. I've read so much about them and I couldn't bare to see all the animals like that..... :'(

Oh no. I've never been to a show before but while we're on holiday in August we are going to the Chagford Show in Devon where amongst other things there will be a guinea pig show. I dont think i'll go now if thats how they are treated! What a shame, poor piggies :(

Then that is a very poorley run show, all the shows ive ever attended its is stated in the rules u must supply hay & veggies, many people use the small mouse water bottles on the cages & toys too & that isnt a problem, the judges ive meet have always been very easy to talk to and more than helpfull, yes the cages are small , but there not living conditions there in them for the show thats it & at the bath n west there were signs every where telling the public that these are not the size of cages a cavy would live in & they need much bigger accomadation. mine certainly arnt bored, many do lie down for a snooze & we take them out for a cuddle after n before the main showing times.
to be honest I'm more worried by seeing piggies kept in bad health (ie some of the ones brought to me for grooming) by people who cant groom there pet, than by healthy , pammpered piggies. as i know my show piggies are made a complete fuss of by not only myself & daughter at shows but my freinds too.
you may think it unkind or cruel, but lets be honest in this day n age if it were it would be stopped straight away.
it may not be for you, you may not like it , but it doesnt mean its cruel & you have witnessed a very bad example i suggest if you see that again you take photos of the condition & report it ? i also find it amazing any show would ask you to leave youre animal with them, they are youre responsibilty & i spend the entire show close by my piggies , i wouldnt dream of leaving them for someone eles to care for >:(

I used to show hamsters and buns i was brc reg for about 10 years. You can give your buns/pigs water and all must have veg, the cages are quite small but the buns aren't in them too long I used to take a larger cages and transfer them into the show cages before judging. i have never known a show that you have to leave your pets they are usually shown by you or a friend and never left for someone unknown by you to show.

I agree with bramble to show a bun or piggy they have to be in tip top condition they are probably cuddled, groomed and washed more than a pet piggy (i'm not saying pet buns/ pigs aren't loved any less) but they quickly become accustomed to it and i dont think they actually mind :)

yes I agree with that they are so relaxed when being shown and stand quite still that they have had a lot of handling to be that way, and of course they are in top condition to win

hi only reason i left him with the guy who run it was he was a friend (not anymore) i have showed iowa in a few shows and yes some of them aren't that bad and most are pretty well run but you do get the odd one where it's just awful.
i would never leave iowa or any of my piggies with someone i didn't know

me either my pigs are my life :smitten: just had some nice cuddles , need to be relaxed more often apparently my Dr said so more cuddles coming up , ;)

I've been to a small animal show which had piggies and bunnies and they were fine - looked very healthy and happy, lots of hay and veg. The cages were small but the animals aren't in there for long.

think it just depends on the show and organisers and what owners are prepared to let their pigs go through , mine are 100% sure winners but i dont need a judge to tell me that in fact if any judge criticised my darlings well can you imagine my reply, it would go something like this :tickedoff: :tickedoff: 666) 666)

The kent county show is great, they really look after the contestants there hay water the works,, i mean i am not sure of shows but the county show seems to be very for the pets

I would just like to say I did not mean to offend anyone who shows their piggies or buns, all the animals were in beautiful condition, and were obviously well cared for,my comment was really about the show ensuring that the animals were kept in appropiate cages as obviously these cages were provided by the show rather than the owners. So sorry if anyone took offence,it is the last thing I meant to do! :)sx

There is a rabbit tent at Kent County is run VERY WELL and all rabbits must have water at ALL times O0 and the secretary puts up a barrier around the tent to stop the rabbits being touched and the tent is located under trees for maximum coolness.

I'm not going to Kent County this year though due to a holiday.

sure non of us took offence, every one has a right to their own opinion, that's what makes us intresting & different, just sad you only saw a bad example :)

I've never witnessed that at all the shows I've been to. The show pens are provided by the cavy club hosting the show and not the exhibitors (although plans for exhibitors to be able to provide their own are being discussed). You have to remember that most shows are held in village halls etc where space is limited and when you can have upwards of 100 cavies entered, providing every cavy with a great big cage wouldn't be feasable. The show stewards have to be able to go to the pens and get the pigs out for judging quickly and efficiently. Its an almost certainty at every show there will be a show pen stuffed with hay and the stewards have the task of trying to find and catch the pig among said hay. The pigs sit still and usually chill out in their show pens. Any pigs that don't take to it and get stressed and frightened aren't exhibited as a stressed pig will lose condition and will not win. At normal shows, the pigs can be boxed up and taken home as soon as judging has finished. Its different at agricultural shows as the pigs, buns etc are part of the show and the public are paying money to go to the show and see the exhibits and so they must remain at the show until the end of the day. The public don't want to pay money to look at empty show pens because the exhibitors have taken their animals home.

I think it really does depend on the area- i often go to such shows and have a stall selling my stuff and so theres plenty of time to see behind the scenes and chat to people.

Many of the ones i have been to have been ok, the cages are small but theyre not in there too long usually and alot of shows dont put hay in as it gets tangled in their coat etc which defeats the object of spending hours grooming them, and if pigs dont have bottles they normally have cucumber or other watery foods in there which they happily munch on.

A lot of show people i have spoken to especially pet show people love their piggies to bits and regularly bath them etc etc and take them to shows as they are proud of how lovely they are and want to share that with fello enthusiasts.
However, there are a few who sadly have 100s and admit they give them away when they are too old for breeding, dont give them treats or good hay because it would be too expensive etc etc but thats just a handful of people amongst 100s

But saying that I have also been to a couple of shows where ive vowed never too go back due to conditions or the way people shunt them around, i have noticed attitudes vary from area to area. I left one show and burst into tears after a conversation with one woman i was so appauld by her attitude- but again an isolated incident.

I personally wouldnt show my piggies they are happy in their huge pens at home and i know their gorgeous so thats all that matters! :smitten:
