I've recently taken on a 8mth old sow. Shes always been caged although taken out for cuddles. Doesnt even know what grass is. She has a skin conplaint, treated about 3 weeks ago for mites. It's centered around the shoulder area - no where else, completely bald. There have been open wounds but they are healing. She is still occasionally scratching. I did think it might have been an allergy to shavings, she's now bedded on fleece/vetbed. She will be going to the vets next week for a check-up but can anybody offer any suggestions/ advice as to what it may be or to help soothe her skin. The naked skin looks healthy and pink and there is no flakiness. Thanks.

Aw, the poor little girl :( Thank goodness you have her now :)
I wouldn't worry too much about the patch of hair loss, the shoulders are the most accessible place for them to scratch so will do excessively if they are itchy.
Only thing I would suggest as I've used it myself is from the Gorgeous Guineas ranges of products, Aloe Vera soothe gel which is fab.
I have used a teeny spot of Sudocrem once when one of my long haired boys scratched himself on New Years Day with no adverse effect.
Have you got a name for little one yet ?

Hope this pigture comes through. It took us ages to pick the right name. She's called Magpie or Maggie for short.

Oops, sorry photo bucket not playing. Ill try to describe her. She's white with a ridge along her back, black patches over her eyes and a ginger splodge behind her ear.

She sounds cute :)

If the skin is looking pink & healthy & healing ok then I would hope you've got rid of the mites & the hair should return in time.

Did you do a repeat treatment to get rid of any newly hatched mites too?

Photo not working as you've linked to the name rather than the IMG code btw :)

Thanks for the technical tip Shiny :{ I only picked her up yesterday. The previous owner did say she had been treated. Once then 7 days later. When I take her to the vet next week I'll ask as to whether I need to treat again.

Hopefully they got it all but good idea to check with vet anyway. Glad she has found her forever home with you :)
