mo caught his foot on side of the cage once when i put him back in, noticed he was limping so took him back out again and noticed tyhere was quite a lot of blood so phoned the vet whose first comment was "well if you think it necessary to bring him up" to which i replied yes as for a small animal there seemed to be a lot of blood

vet said had no choice but to clip the nail right off which was alot of squealing involved (from mo as well as me mallethead) then he cauterised it mo now has the nickname stumpy hehe but seems ok just looks a wee bit funny as there is no nail but the hair is still there :))

One of my first pigs ripped his nail off, jumping over the side of a commercial cage. Same pig bit his own nails off three years later! Neither event was fatal, there was blood and the nails did grow back to some degree. In the first instance, it took around six months for his nail to reach a normal length. It took much longer for any growth to occur on the bitten toenails, the nails were only tiny stumps when he passed away of another illness 15 months later.

My youngest girl hurt her toenail a few weeks ago. On washing away the blood it seems that the nail was split right up to the toe. Although she was holding the foot up at first, she wasn't limping and it didn't seem to bother her too much. The bleeding stopped quickly, so I left her be.

Just this week the nail has dropped of completely. Like yours, the edge of her toe is slightly dark due to scabbing but there is no swelling or additional blood. She's still putting weight on it, running and popcorning and she'll not pull away when you try to touch it so I figured it is not causing her much pain.

My advice would be to keep your eye on it, but as long as there is no swelling or bleeding, you should be okay. Of course if you are worried, a trip to the vet may be in order ;)

emily lost her whole toe nail about a month or so ago - I was worried, but I kept it cleaned and it has slowly started to grow back.

Rosie broke a nail a while ago and it took around ages before it looked ok again. It's still a bit wonky but it never caused her any real problems, just a little sore initially.

Bradders nail fell totally off a few weeks ago but he is totally fine and still stands on it, and it has now started to grow back lol he just has a little stump at the moment.

Don't worry, it is a common thing to happen. It is not fatal. Leave alone.
