Well i had my single indoor boy Yorkie neutered 12 days ago with the view to putting him in with my 2 indoor girls. All was going well post op he was eating, drinking and pooping normally and i was checking his wound daily.

Tonight as i did his daily cage clean i noted that there was a build up of puss around his wound area.

Naturally i flew straight to the vets with him and the vet lanced the wound and this thick yellow pus came out and there was a lot of it, the vet told me he was really glad that i had brought him straight in. He also had some necrotic tissue come out with the pus. The wound was flushed out with saline and he was given a shot of antibiotics and now he is on a course of oral antibiotics and twice daily hibiscrub clean of the wound (which i was doing daily anyway).

I lost Jacob a year or so ago with a post op infection after he was neutered so naturally i am very concerned about Yorkie. However he is very well in himself and was not showing any signs of illness, so hopefully we have nipped it in the bud and he should recover well x

I am so sorry!

What antibiotic is Yorkie on? The best one for really nasty abscesses is zithromax which can help in cases baytril fails. My Hywel wouldn't be here today without it.

Simon Maddock in Northampton (one of the best guinea pig vets in the country) champions it and I know of a few neutered boars with bad abscesses and infections who have pulled through thanks to it. I managed to get my vets (Regent in Coventry) to prescribe it for Llewelyn after they spoke to Simon. http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/contact_us.htm

Thanks Wiebke. They have prescribed Baytril for YorKie, but i also use Regent Vets and am due to take Yorkie back on Friday for a check up, so if he is not improving i will talk to them about prescribing Zithromax. It appears that they drained all of the abcess so i am hoping that it does not return. Yorkie is fine after his ordeal, i have left him alone as much as possible cause he is looking slightly pee'd off at the moment bless him.

Well done for your prompt action. Post-op infection is always a risk with piggies especially after neutering. Sometimes piggies have a reaction to the type of thread used for the stitches. Also because of the position of the wound it is really difficult to keep it clean all the time and prevent infection.

Don;t know what you;re keeping him on at the moment but when my pigies have infected wounds near their bits, I put them on newspaper which is changed at least twice a day....(this is the routine at my vets when they board poorly piggies as well) Their hay is put in a rack so it doesn;t end up all over the floor.

This helps the wound stay cleaner and reduces risk of infection being introduced by hay/fibres/sawdust etc coming into contact with the wound.

Hibiscrub is good and I'd second Weibke's suggestion of changing to zitrhomax if it looks like the baytril isn;t clearing it up.

The most important thing now is to monitor his poo output and weigh him daily - sometimes the trauma of a neutering followed by a post-op infection can cause adhesions as the tissue heals and it can stop the gut from working properly. If there is any change in his poos and/or he loses weight each day then please take him back to be checked as he might need a gut stimulant for a few days.

Hopefully he will be back to his perky self soon
x

Good on you !
You have just saved little Yorkie from going thru a nasty experience :{
Totally agree with Pebble about weighing daily :)
One of my piggies had an op and i removed the hay to one area of his house in a container and had him on towels, it makes for lots of washing but it's another alternative.
Best of luck and again WELL DONE :)
Healing vibes and wheeeeeeeks to Yorkie from the girls and I xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

I am just about to take Yorkie for his follow up, h is doing very well, the wound looks great, he is still eating, drinking and pooping normally and he hates his antibiotics, other than getting a bit annoyed with me he is great, lets see what the vet has to say xx

An update on Yorkie, he has had a total of 3 vet visits for check ups and he has tofday been given the all clear. He has recovered from his infection very well and never once went of his food or water, he is a strong boy, must be the promise of 2 girlfriends in the near future.
I was chatting to my vet about how pleased i was that Yorkie had survived because i had lost Jacob with a post neutering infection 18 months ago. Quite interestingly and extremley alarmingly the vet told me that there was a recent study on animals and anaesthetic and 70% of guinea pigs die due to anaesthetic. I was glad he told me this today and not on the day i left Yorkie at the vets for his op. I find that an incredible high amount and decided on the spot i am never going to neuter another male guinea pig and if i need another male guinea pig i will rescue a ready neutered one. What do you guys think of that statistis?

glad he is ok, scarey statistics though, did`nt realise that..:...:...
