Poorly Baby Pig

I think it sounds like she is making really good progress.

I completely agree on the dips, you can apply it topically too though if needed, just mix it up at a smaller concentration.

Okay, that's good to know. We'll see how she is when I take her Monday. If everyone could please just keep all their fingers crossed. URIs are one of my personal Hells tbh, so I really want her to come through.

I am so sorry your going through this, it isn't payback for getting a piggy from a breeder, it's just bad luck.
Like someone has said you are not to blame in anyway. This must be the worst time for you, all I can do is to be so sorry for the way you've been treated. I've been lucky that mine have never had a URI. Regarding your the small claims court you would have to enquiry about that. I know it is different, but I had a faulty bed & I had to go into mediation because you can't go to the court until that's been sorted. With all the hoops you have to jump, it can be well over a year. Do what the RSPCA say & claim vet fees off, of them.
If you have given your name & phone to the RSPCA they have to let you know what happens.
If you want to let off steam we're here.
Healing thoughts to your piggy, but with a mom like you, she'll be fine. Hugs for you xx

*hugs* Thank you.

Sadly the RSPCA cannot help me with the bills, I've made inquiries. Because I am working there's nothing they can do. Which is fair enough, there are other people out there in a far worse position than mine.

I'm waiting a call from the Citizens Advice Bureau next, to see if they can offer any further tips. I'm loathe to approach the breeder directly, obv. she's not at all happy that I have got the RSPCA involved.

Ceridwen must have decided I needed a boost today; I walked through the door and she decided to wheek for me, for the first time. It was loud and strong and enthusiastic.

She's very very bright right now. Hyper, even. Popcorning like crazy, playing with her hidey, trying to climb the side of the cage and nibble things. Her weight has dipped 15g back to 350, but I'm watching her eat hay right now and have given her 8.5ml of Emeraid. I will step it up and give her an extra portion tonight. Trying not to worry just yet. She's so bright that I'm taking everything as good as I can. There's a tonne of poops too, so food is moving.

It's cruddy quality. Taken from a safe distance on my phone so I didn't disturb her. That's not her permanent home, don't worry. We just keep the pet store cages for quarantine/emergency purposes.

That was her last night, having her first bowl of veg. It's a tiny portion and very basic, but she inhaled it.

OMG she is adorable. She looks really bright.

Isn't she? She's still doing really well as of this morning. I gave her some more veg as her poops are holding their consistency after her dinner last night and SCHWUMP! Down the hatch it went. I think her nose is starting to dry up a bit too. There was no discharge at all last night, and a tiny, tiny tiny bubble in her left nostril this morning after she sneezed that I was able to lift out with my fingernail tip. it was tiny, just a smidgen and I had a peek in her nostrils after and they looked pink and clean.

Okay, so we're a week into treatment and I'm starting to get concerned that these antibiotics aren't kicking it. She's still sneezing a lot and we're still getting nasal discharge. It's clear and it seems to only be one nostril at a time. It's not a lot but it's worrying. Should we have had more progress than this by now?

Gaah.... She just pulled her scab off again... Pulled her out and cleaned her up, she was very distressed. And I've found more fungus spreading down her face. I think we're going to have to get more firm with treatment... So frightening with such a tiny girl...

We're trying. I think I am going to ask vet for itrafungol on Monday, I daren't bath her.
yes, I think you are going to need something to get it under control.

She on the metacam for the pain, yes?

Poor baby, she is beautiful, I am so glad she has you looking after her

She is, yes. She's coping bravely, very quickly after I put her home she was up and eating, and ate for a good 45 minutes. Her next vet visit is Monday, we'll do our best to keep her clean and comfortable as possible until then.

Itrafungol is okay for baby pigs isn't it?

give her a gentle cuddle for me, I'll keep checking in on her thread.

We use Imaverol topically as Helen has suggested and have used it on young piggies also

I am unsure on Itrafungal @furryfriends (TEAS) @helen105281 @Elwickcavies @Wiebke @Jaycey @Adelle Can it be used with baby piggies?

Short of dipping her in that, how can I make sure it would be applied topically effectively enough? She has lots of little speckles along her face under her fur and she's itching a lot so I suspect there is more. But with her respiratory issues I really really don't want to get her wet. I think I have some antifungal spray knocking about, but again, I am worried about her chest with that

I think Itrafungal be the way to go if possible. We work the imaverol in with a cotton pad soaking each area with it made with warm water. With her URi though I can see why you'd not want to get her wet. See what your vet says.

Okay thanks for the advice. I'll speak to Celine Monday and press on with the hibiscrub and F10 on the big wound in the mean time

Please ring up your vet tomorrow and ask whether itrafungol is OK; it is fine with 8-10 week old shop bought guinea pigs. If in doubt, just treat her topically (on the skin).

None of the exotic vets at the practice work weekends...

None of the exotic vets at the practice work weekends...

Then you see a general vet for immediate vet care to ensure that yours gets what is needed to get her through the weekend until she can be seen by an exotics vet if it is something that cannot wait.

I've just raced one of mine with acute gut stasis to my local no-frills vets last Saturday nmorning; she wouldn't have survived the weekend. It has saved her life!

Please do not make the mistake of thinking that a general vet is unfit to examine your guinea pig and not be able to make an educated guess as to what could be wrong! Or that only top notch care will do the trick.
