Bit of background information, Bea has had ovarian cysts previously and is thought to have renal disease. She is 5 or 6 years old as an estimate so I know she is an OAP. She was underweight until recently. I have been treating her with cystease and supplementing her with critical care. She picked up weight and was over 700g for a while. This routine of medicine and critical care seemed to be maintaining her weight.

She has now lost weight again, 695g so not a major amount but enough to be underweight. She didn't want the critical care today so had to syringe feed her and after several mls she was taking it of her own accord again. However, first time I have seen this ever... she ate two poops that she did on my counter top... not the normal poops that you would expect her to eat but her "everyday waste" big dark brown 'raisin' ones.

So my concern is what do I do now? The vet has already said there is nothing else they can do for her. They could look to formally diagnose renal disease but even if they do theres nothing they can give her. Any suggestions on whats going on?

Poor Bea :(

Is she doing an normal amount of poo? I would syringe feed her cc to keep her intake up and maybe a little poo soup too as you noticed her eating her normal poo, she may be after some nutrients from it. Lots of love to her x

I agree with Lee on the feeding and poo soup, but maybe also add some probiotics in too?

I think there is not much you can do for renal disease. Is there a more cavy savvy vet in your area who you could see who may be able to help. What made your vet think it was renal disease? It may be that her weight will drop in stages and then she will stay at that weight for a while before dropping again. My Terk did that. As far as I am aware with renal disease it is a case of keeping them comfortable until the time comes when you may need to make the decision.

it was the cavy savvy vet who said he thought it was renal disease. She had ovarian cysts which popped while he was examining her but he also tested her urine and said that's where the weight loss was from, confirmed it wasn't diabetes which left him to believe it was renal especially as she didn't have any symptoms indicating anything else.

I will keep up feeding her and consider making poo soup lol, will get some more probiotics in as well. Poor little lady, I just want her to be comfortable

Sorry didn't mention but yes she is doing a normal amount of poo. Apart from eating the poo and loosing weight she seems bright as a button and just like her normal self

Has she been scanned or xrayed? It's just that Terk had an ovarian tumour which made her lose weight.

No she's not had a scan or xray, I might take her back to the vets to see if I can get one done on the safe side. Might even try to get out to Chine House as the cavy savvy vet isn't at my normal vets anymore so they are the closest ones now

I don't Debbie, my partner has moved up to Leicester now. Chine House have an excellent exotics vet called Craig who I have been to several times before so will get back in there

Just a quick update, I think Bea is getting near the end of her life now. She still seems happy and scoffs her veg like there's no tomorrow. Pooing normally, weeing normally and no more eating normal poo's. She is starting to reject the cc that I give her each night now and feels more like a bag of bones. She's had a thorough check over and unfortunately/fortunately (not sure which one it would be) there is nothing else causing her problems so its now a matter of time for her. I spend a good hour with her every night with cc and extra veggies to monitor her and she doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort at the moment.

I am so sorry Bea is a very special little lady and you have looked after her so well. Huge hugs Kelly and a cuddle to beautiful Bea

I'm so sorry to hear this. Take each day as it comes and let her be your guide. She will let you know when she is ready.

Bless her. Give her a big cuddle from me
