I took on a boar a few weeks ago, I have no idea how old he is, but I'd make a guess at about 1-2 yrs old as his nails are still in the semi-nice phase :) ...anyway...I noticed on the first day he was here that he had an impaction, when I cleaned him out all his poo's were really tiny, like baby piggie sized! So I figured they were getting stuck because of the size.

Then I realised that he wasn't eating, so I tried a different type of mix from my friend and offered him tons and tons of veg/hay/grass...Twice he completely soaked himself in urine and then when I was checking his bum I found that he had something stuck up his boy bits...so I removed it and hoped he would get a bit better after that...but 2 days later he was still not great, so I popped him along to the vets. He was treated for a UTI, baytril and metacam, and his teeth were checked, and he was weighed...965g's.

After the full course of treatment he was still loosing weight, so I took him to the vets again for a follow up, and to double check his teeth. He was weighed at 870g's...so had lost 100g's in a week...and wasn't eating properly still at all. The vet gave him a vitamin injection and told me to bring him back the next day for further tests.

He was sedated, had his teeth checked properly, x-ray, scan and bloods taken. Teeth were fine, liver and kidneys were fine, but when they looked at the x-ray they found that he had nothing in the top half of his digestive system (teeth were full of mushed up spinach, but nothing between his mouth and his intestines)...and that his intestines were completely full of poo. The vet gave me some ranitidine for him, and said that if he didn't pick up within the week then we needed to think about pts.

He's a lovely boy and I really really really didn't want to pts, so I tried him with all my boars to see if I could find him a friend (I have quite a few of them! :) ) and luckily managed to find him someone who he got on with...he was loosing more weight, even after the last vet appointment, and went really quiet and wasn't well at all after starting the medicine, but the friend piggie really perked him up, and now he's eating and coming up for kisses and head rubs xoxo

BUT...he's still not a great weight, he seems to have put a tiny amount on, but not very much...does anyone have any ideas as to what I can feed him that might help him bulk out? He's like a bag of bones at the moment 8... and I can't bare to see him like this 8...

This is my gorgeous baby boy...Squidge :) ...he's a black, cream and white roan/brindled sheltie

I'm so sorry to hear about poor Squidge feeling so unwell :(

It sounds like you finding him a friend has done him a world of good.

How are his poos now? Is he still getting impacted?

:(

0.4ml of metatone daily can boost appetite, porridge oats can help with weight gain, my older piggy loves them!
Hope he feels better soon.

They're a bit soft, but that's to be expected considering how long they've been in his gut, and that he's having the ranitidine to help him pass them easier...but no, he's not impacted any more....thankfully!

Could you syringe feed him some CC? He's so beautiful, sending him healing vibes :laluot_29::laluot_29:

He was having CC when he wasn't eating much, but now he's eating a fair amount I've stopped giving it to him...

Okey dokey, sometimes it is suggested to continue to feed some CC to get his weight back up. I don't have much experience in this area so wouldn't want to give any more advice but i'm sure someone else will come along with some ideas.

Is it that he's eating a lot but not gaining weight, or do you think he still needs to up his intake? I guess if he is eating a lot but not gaining weight then something else could be going on?

Well he's eating more than he was, he gained a small amount, but not as much as I would like him to...I hope nothing else is going on! :...

It can take a while for piggies to put on weight again after an illness. The best way is top up him up with a bit of CC and keep on weighing daily to monitor his food intake in case he has a relapse.

Glad he is happy with a new boarfriend.

thanks

I'm getting some metatone tomorrow from my friend, and I'll put him back on the CC as well then...

I weighed him this afternoon, I reckon at the beginning of the week he was around 800g's...today he was around 890g's :) so he has gone back up a fair amount over the last 5 days

Hi. One of my girls Dotty is on permanent meds for arthritis and bladder probs. She was losing loads of weight before Christmas and so I started feeding her CC. For a while she was on 120gs per day and she put on loads of weight. Her eating has improved amazingly well. I have heard that some guineas on meds can get annorexia, so I have put it down to that. I am only now topping her up every day with 20gs of CC and continue to weigh her every day. She has got her attitude back so I know she is ok!

You might find that you have to permanently syringe feed him a little to keep him topped up. For me its a small price to pay, plus it gives me a chance to give her a cuddle and some tlc, even if she grumbles at me!!

Use 1ml syringes and cut the end off. You can buy them on the internet or get them at the chemist. The last kind hearted chemist gave me a load for free.

Hope that this helps you. Good luck xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
