Hi Everyone,

My piggie Henry has got a bad eye. I took him to the vets last week and they prescribed some antibiotics, pain relief and eye drops (metacam, baytril & isathal) His eye appeared to be getting better but then all of a sudden started swelling again, has a blue tinge to it and looks like a film has covered his eye, I’ve attached a photo to show as best as I can. He’s eating and running around ok and doesn’t appear to be bothered about it. My issue is that I literally haven’t got the money to take him back to the vets. I don’t qualify for free treatment from PDSA as I’m not on benefits. My car decided to break which has cost me nearly £300 to get fixed! I really don’t know what to do as I don’t want him to suffer. Any advise or if anyone else’s piggie has had a similar thing? Thank you

Hi! Please take him back to the vets ideally today; do not wait until Monday if at all possible! Swelling is a very worrying sign. The blue film is an ulceration. Eye injuries can unfortunately deteriorate very quickly.

I can’t, I literally haven’t got the money to do it!

Which country are you in? In the UK, clinics may agree to a payment plan. There are also a number of no frills clinics in urban areas.

The problem is that with a swelling eye and a recurrence of the symptoms you are possibly dealing with a retrobulbar abscess, i.e. an abscess that is located behind the eye and that requires a strong antibiotic to get down on top of the eye infection that is causing the surface ulceration, which is treated with antibiotic eye drops. the other possibility is that the infection has penetrated deeper into the eye and the treatment has stopped too soon. :(

I’m in the UK in Warwickshire. I’ve rang a couple of vets and they won’t do any kind of payment plan, I don’t get paid until Friday 😞

You are seriously running the risk of your Guinea pig dying. Do you not have a credit card you can use or friends to lend you money? Unfortunately, whilst I appreciate the situation is difficult, you simply cannot leave it hours let alone days.

I hope you can find a way to finance the urgent vet treatment needed.
You may want to start building a vet fund when this crisis is over.
It’s pretty much a given that vet fees are going to coincide with something else like garage bills or the boiler breaking down.
Holding you in my thoughts

Maybe you could borrrow some money from somebody? If you have a no frills chain near you like Vets4Pets it may be worth a try there?
Either way I know it’s hard when you’re low on funds but eye injuries can be both serious and painful :(
Good luck :) x

While I agree this is a serious situation I don't think it's useful to panic or jump to conclusions.

@Peter_Henry, is it the consult itself you can't afford, or the treatment? If you are in a housing crisis or on benefits the PDSA or the Blue Cross might treat you for free or at a reduced cost. If not as above I'd personally say look for a Vets4Pets practice near you, they're on the less expensive side.
