Hi, my guinea pig had dental surgery 4 days ago. He is eating now only after spoon feeding him critical care food but he has lost his personality. He no longer squeeks or makes any noise at all. Can someone help please as this is really upsetting.

Hi and welcome

Please step up your syringe feeding regime first and foremost (spoon feeding is not enough) and contact the vet clinic again asap.
It is impossible for us to say whether your piggy is having a bad reaction to any anaesthetics or whether the dentals have not been done correctly. Have you been given painkillers and how experienced are your vets with the procedure?

You can find lots of practical and very helpful tips for care support and when to see a vet in these links here:

Fingers firmly crossed for your poorly piggy.

Thankyou for your reply. Yes the veterinary is a very reputable & experienced one. I am still administering painkillers & Cisapride suspension. He is eating his all his normal food so I stopped the critical care food

Please continue with weighing daily at the same time (I prefer first thing in the morning for the best day to day comparison) for the duration because hay makes 75-80% of the daily food intake - and you cannot control that just by eye. This is the best way to ensure that he is really eating properly and fully.
Weight - Monitoring and Management

If he is able to eat normally but is very lethargic, then it is more likely an issue with the GA which needs to be seen by your treating vet clinic.

Just a quick update. We took Bob our guinea pig to the vets this evening. He thoroughly examined him & said overall he was in good health. He has put weight on since our last visit. He has prescribed antibiotics as he suspected he could have a slight infection. He said that after surgery animals do get stressed & this could be the result, he was hopeful that in time Bob will be back to normal & a check up visit at the hospital has been arranged.
Thankyou so much for your advice x

Could someone please tell me do their piggies sleep a lot during the winter months. Bob is sleeping a lot & seems to be very quiet. He's eating & drinking well & when we give him floor time he's very active. Is this normal during winter months as this is the first winter that we have had him. By the way he's an indoor piggie

Hi!

How old is Bob?

Guinea pigs are most active in the mornings and evening (they are crepuscular). During the day and night, they will sleep a lot (especially in the middle of the day), interspersed with some quiet browsing. They do however not hibernate or sleep more in winter than in summer.
