Today Lily had a very prompt first visit to the vet, she's always been a large lady but last week lost 50g and looked a touch dirty around her grease gland. No other symptoms and being over 1200g I thought I would keep an eye on her and see how she goes. This week 40g lost and she spent the time in the run hiding in the haybox... very odd. Picked her up and she was yellow underneath, her genitals were clearly very swollen, a little messy and quite red with what looked like the start of a urine scald. So as soon as I got to work this morning I phoned, booked an afternoon appointment and took half a day annual leave. The vet isn't too sure what's going on - can't feel any ovarian cysts and she was a bit gassy in her abdomen (Lily not the vet :))) so the ultrasound wasn't too clear and was stressing Lily out too much so they had to stop. There is a small amount of discharge so we have a high dose of antibiotics and metacam on the safe side and I need to monitor her carefully. The vet mentioned possible cysts which I have experienced before but also possible pyometra which I know is very serious. Please keep everything tightly crossed for my little lady

I just wanted to say, that sounds like potentially pyometra (infection of the womb lining). If caught early on, it can be cured pretty straight forwardly with an antibiotic, which you have hopefully been given?

My Cariad was found to have borderline pyometra in her grossly enlarged and fluid-filled womb, which also contained a lump and some rather nasty looking ovarian cysts, which is why I opted for an emergency spay despite her small weight and only have a year after a major bladder stone op.

Fingers very firmly crossed for Lily!

Excellent, I've been doing some reading online and it does seem to indicate pyometra but the vet had to really search to find some discharge so hopefully it is really early stages and probably where I should be grateful that she is white so its easy to spot staining. She's been given 0.46ml baytril once a day with metacam to keep her comfortable. She's very determined when it comes to not being handled and definitely not taking her meds but on once a day at least I can take my time after work to get it done without stressing us both out

Sounds horrible..plenty of healing vibes being sent your way here's to a speedy recovery& hope it's nothing serious
Xx

You can imagine my work colleagues face when I asked him if there was anything in the diary for me this afternoon as my computer was loading. Called the vets and went:
"Could I make an appointment for my guinea pig this afternoon?"
"She isn't registered yet, try Donald"
"Lily"
"white"
"around 18 months old"
"she's got swollen genitals which are dirty and sore"
"that's great, see you then"

His face was a picture

Me and my piggies send you lots of hugs and hope that whatever it is, its been caught early. Get well soon little piggy, love from Wilf, Milly, Wilbur and Matilda x

That seems a very low baytril dosage. What does your piggy weigh?

I'm surprised by that as I think it's the largest dose of antibiotics I've had prescribed. She's 1150g or was yesterday, i've forgotten what weight the vets scales said

You give that dose twice daily for a piggy with UTI! ;)

It’s many years since I’ve had baytril prescribed for a piggy, but we get a lot of piggies arriving at TEAS, who’ve been prescribed baytril by their vet back home and all have been on around 0.4 mls twice a day. These piggies weigh considerably less than Lily too. I was just very surprised to see the dose you’ve been prescribed. Especially if pyometra is suspected.

Gwen had pyometra which was caught early and treated successfully thank god! Sending lots of healing vibes for little Lily xx

How is Lily today?

She's looking a lot better. On Sunday she was wet, messy, swollen and red. Monday when I took her vets she had shown improvement. Today - well I have just recovered from wrestling with her to get her meds in and had a good check, the swelling has nearly all gone and I checked quite closely and couldn't see any discharge at all so fingers crossed whatever it was is on its way

Just caught up with this thread. Looks like you caught it in time. Well done for spotting it and getting her to the vets so promptly. I laughed out loud at the conversation with the vets as I put myself in the position of your work colleague!

I don't think I could have kept a straight face :))

Think my colleagues are used to me talking about guinea pig biology/health/welfare & general quirks! Lol! :)
Hope lily is still doing well xx

She still seems to be doing ok, shes still fighting all medication including the metacam but she's getting it anyway. She looked a little bit messier today but that could be to do with endless sleeping due to the weather and her not moving around as much

I’ve had to bum bathe Poppy and Sylvia today. Both are “larger ladies”and struggling in the heat and moving round less. By the looks of it they’ve just been lying on the spot weeing on themselves :vom:. I’m hoping it’s just the weather and nothing more sinister.

Glad you seemed to have caught it early - sending best wishes for a quick recovery.

Orca's a "senior plump'y" too, she has been sleeping loads & having regular pancaking sessions  looks cute-but when she's been sleeping in the tunnels she just let's it flow! Not so good facing downhill! Bleuk! Xx
