Hi I havent posted berfore, I have only just joined and I hoped my first post would be something less worrying. Any help gratfully recieved. I have a 5.2 year sow who has been recently losing weight so a trip to the vet followed. usual -baytril metacam and keep an eye on her . took her back and it was thought that she had either a fracture in the jaw(soreness when touched) or teeth had overgrown. Faced with the prospect of slowly starving to death or G.A for tooth trimming. (vets wont trim molars without G.A). fortunatly every thing went fine. took her for post op check saw different vet who said insiscors were a bitlong so trimmed them. Unfortunatly a bit of the bottom tooth has sheared off so it was trimmed right back to the gum line tomake it more comfortable. now she has even more trouble eating - cant grasp the food. so syringe feeding, cutting her food small also having metacam, baytril, fibrplex from the vets and metacam and daktarin gel to help her along. I am back to work on monday so I am a bit worried. Any ideas :...

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry things are turning out to be so drawn out. Dental issues often can be.

Whereabouts are you?

Oh another member in Devon. I'm not at all experienced in these matters but someone will be along soon who'll be full of good ideas. In the meantime, Bill and Ben are sending healing wheeks to your girl. Let us know how you get on. x x

Well Ive just put Lily to bed - after her daktarin gel, a top up of science selective (syringe) and fibreplex, she put up quite a fight so I'm thinking shes feeling better. she actually managed two spinach leaves and a leaf of red chard - not shredded and a small piece of apple all by herself, Although she is off to the vets again tomorrow just for a check up fingers crossed its good news.

Well the vet was pleased with her, her tooth is starting to grow back nice and smooth, she upset Lily by giving her an injection, cant remember what its called but its the one to keep her gut moving (to prevent stasis). Hopefully this will be the last visit for a while, Lily has been 6 times since last week, she is starting to eat a bit more -hay and greenstuff although I will still top her up with syringe feeding while necessary. Fingers crossed we have turned the corner and now well on the road to recovery
:)

Glad to hear that the vet's trip went well (apart from the injection anyway!) and that Lily is feeling much better :)

I only started reading this forum about four months ago when Lily's sister (Sherbet) became ill .She had to be PTS due to bladder cancer, we didnt realise it was cancer until she was operated on and even then the vets still were not 100% sure it wasnt till antibiotics and plenty of pain relief just wasnt working. I would like to say thankyou on her and Lilys behalf for all the invaluble advise and information given so freely on this forum. By the way Lily tried to eat a carrot baton this afternoon but just couldn't grasp it but she is having a go and really putting up a fight I think shes going to make it.

Sorry to hear about poor little Sherbert. Sounds like you gave her every possible chance, as you are with Lily.

I'd definitely take it as a good sign that Lily is at least interested in food, even if she doesn't quite have the means to eat properly just yet. Fingers crossed her improvement continues x

update on Lily- well she is eating more and a lot happier in her attitude and behaviour- more active. I changed her food from gertie to tescos purple bag the pieces are smaller (shes still being topped up with science selective and c/c) and her bottom teeth are growing back nicely but I just wanted to ask how long before I can expect her eating habits to be back to normal, she is still having trouble picking up certain foods or is it that each recovery period is different for individuals.
