My poor boy, Nelson is very poorly at the moment :( His health is declining and we don't know why. He's losing weight, his skin is dry and flaky, he has weakness in his back legs and now he has an infection in his eye :( He's already on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and we're taking him to see Simon tomorrow for his eye. It breaks my heart to see him so unwell :(

Aww honey I'm sorry to hear you're having a tough time and nelsons so unwell, me and the piggles send our love and hugs and wish all the best tomorrow x

Could it possibly be a lack of Vitamin C? I had a quick look on Guinea Lynx and some of Nelson's symptoms sound very similar. If he's already under the weather and on antibiotic's it may of really knocked his appetite. Oxbow make some tablets called Daily C which are a great way of topping up your pigs Vit C intake especially when they're feeling poorly. Fingers crossed for Nelson, it's always stressful and upsetting when they get ill.

Thanks for the replies! :) Nelson is looking a little chirpier since Simon decreased his antibiotics (which could have suppressed his appetite) and his eye is clearing up really fast! I will have a look for the vitamin C things, I did wonder whether we needed to give him any supplements as he's not eating so much, but it wasn't mentioned at the vets.

Can giving them too much vitamin c be dangerous?

Generally, excess vitamin C will be simply not absorbed. Long term too high dosage can have ill effects, though. It is advisable to up the vitamin C dosis of an ill piggy temporarily; fresh herbs can help with that - many ill piggies like them or you can add oxbow vitamin C tablets to his diet. Also make sure that Nelson stays hydrated.

I hope that he will continue to get back to good health again!

Hope Nelson returns to full health soon! Get well soon little one.
