Hello, been a little concerned about my boy recently, he has been to the vets this week with a few man problems but vet didn't seem concerned. Last night he was in pain and hasnt been able to toilet at all. I have checked for impaction but all clear. Vets aren't open yet but thought I'd see if anyone knows what may be wrong with him?

If he's not able to toilet it's possible he has a blockage. Is he trying to toilet? Has he been eating?

I must stress if your boy has a blockage it is a potentially life threatening condition and he will need to see a vet ASAP!

He has been trying for a while, he is eating ... slightly less than usual still willing to drink. As soon as the vets open in an hour I will be straight on the phone. Just didnt know if I can make him more comfy in the meantime. He seems relaxed at the moment but its very up and down :-(

It sounds as if your guinea pig has a gastrointestinal issue - Be that bloat, a blockage, and/or stasis -, and, therefore, requires emergency/urgent veterinary treatment!

Is your veterinary practice cavy-savvy/good with guinea pigs?

Yes, if they are unsure they ask colleagues there and then. Just gutted they hadnt spotted any other issues on Wednesday :-(

I havent seen him do any business which is a real worry...

If your guinea pig is unable to urinate, he needs to be examined by a veterinarian ASAP - Tell your veterinary practice that you are bringing your guinea pig in immediately/that you cannot wait for an appointment. Good luck.

Please have him seen as soon as you can today; there can be a range of things, including semen rods or constipation etc.

Please also weigh him daily at the same time to monitor his food intake and to be able to step in with syringe feeding as soon as necessary. Pain generally causes lack of appetite.

Hi all thanks for your advice.

Took him to the vet she couldn't understand what was wrong with him.... he has since urinated and poooped so not sure what happened to him. He is now eating as normal. .....very strange but I'm watching him closely x

Might be advisable to have your guinea pig's urine tested.

What did your guinea pig eat in the 24 hours prior to this episode?

Hi,
He always has fresh hay and guinea pig nuggets. And I had given him some cabbage that morning. Its all things he has always eaten...

he is now toileting and has occasional struggle but nowhere near as bad as the last night ...and he isnt squeaking when going now...

not sure what happened to my little man! But eating fine now as well....
Have wondered if it could be down to the fact I bought his nuggets elsewhere in December....have gone back to the ones he used to have just in case! X

Oh what a mischievous boy! I worried about one of my girls who had done approx 4 poops in 24 hours after an op last year, the vet was getting worried and then the nurse that looked after her came on shift and was like "I'm not surprised really, after she woke up she proceeded to make the biggest poo mountain I have ever seen a Guinea pig do". They do like to worry us but do keep an eye on his progress, if your vet isn't sure maybe they can recommend a Guinea pig savvy vet locally who might have a better idea.

I know! He was a little tinker- the vet thoroughly examined him but couldn't work out why he wasn't going...she could see no blockages of any kind anywhere checked ears mouth etc. .... so told me to keep watching, gave me some tips on how to get hair balls moving in case it was that, and gave me digestion tips for him.....the second he was home he had urinated and pooped several times....I dont think it was painful either as the only noises he made in the car were soft purrs.....obv relieved piggie! X

Don't really have anything to add, but such a handsome piggie!
Arr thank you! I very much agree! :-) - he is also full of personality; proper cheeky chappy :-) all piggies are gorgeous though :-)

Hi all

just to let you know it turns out Bubbly had kidney stones!

He just passed one and I instantly knew then what was wrong. I will take him to the vets again in case there are more but since he is doing even better.

Poor boy no wonder he was wheeking on Thursday night :-(

Pleased to hear that Bubbly has managed to pass a stone - Here's hoping that it is the only one.

Please keep us updated.

Thank you! Yes I will let you know! He did seem to perk up straight away..so here is hoping his pain is over X
