Hi guys, peanut had his op tuesday. All went well and he was moving about and eating fine. was chatting to his girlfriend in next cage and seemed ok if a little annoyed with me.
Wednesday he was ok just quiet but today he is very quiet not eating anything and not moving about. had him checked by vet this morning and she said wound is fine but worried he is not eating. will have to get painkillers later if he doesn't eat before 2pm. Anybody had similar problem and is there any reasurance? obviously i'm worried

Have you given him a pain killer? 0.2ml of Calpol would be ideal.
He could be developing an infection.
 
Hi Natalie, I'm sorry he doesn't seem to be doing quite so well. As AP suggested, pain relief may help (piggies tend to lose their appetite when they're in pain).

Are you syringe-feeding him?
 
Is he on baytril or another antibiotic already? It could be the beginnings of an infection.

Painkiller might help and syringe feeding him with Critical Care.

No not feeding him. Going to phone vets in a bit to update them and they will give me a painkiller. can i just use calpol then?
not on any meds yet

My jive had one quiet day after his op, he had been given 2 days of baytril after the op, He went to the vet and they said he was fine. I worked out why he was sore was he was jumping up and down a ramp and everything was being pulled down there and making him sore after the ramp was removed he was fine within 36 hours and back to his normal cheeky self.

Have you tried offering his favourite veggies or grass?
 
yeah tried fav stuff. the jumping may be it. i'm taking him to vets now. he is geting really sleepy and making sad noises thanks guys

I've just got back. they gave him painrelief and fluids and syringe fed him. they showed what to do and i've got to fed him untill he starts eating. They did give him meds before the op for infection and pain. his wound still looks fine. think it is pain. lots of cuddles for my little gp and thanks for ramp suggestion.

Hi guys just an update.
Peanut improved after his pain relief and a nap. He has been syringe fed all day and is now eating bits of veg, nuggets and hay. seen him at his water bowl too. He has had alot of cuddle/lap time and is squeking to his neighbour (the reason for the pain lol)

Hiya Natalie this sounds just like my Mork. He stopped eating too and the vet gave him the all clear healing wise. I was advised on here to give him metacam for the pain which I did as I had some here. I also syringe fed him for 3 days - day 3 of refusing food he started to eat again (same day as I started the pain relief).

I just had another boy done this week (tuesday funnily enough) and this time I have started the metacam straight away and no issues with appetite.

I haven't read all the replies so hope you have it all sorted by now anyway.

He def seems better when the pain relief kicks in. Don't have any metacam where would i get that? I have syringe fed him this morning as he only nibbled his food. he still seems ok. not like yesterday morning gosh that was scary. obviously doesn't like pain much ay! I think the pain should be easing now, it's been 3 days. hopefully tomorrow his appetite is back to normal. Does anybody know if they can just not eat because they like the syringe stuff? Peanut really likes it lol. Don't want him to be dragging it out because he preferes the syringe stuff.

Metacam you can get from your vet. If he is really in a lot of pain, you can give him 0.2ml of young children's calpol from the pharmacy, but be aware that this should be only for emergencies (but should be part of your first aid kit for piggies).

You can start by serving him the mush on a plate, so he can lick it from there and start mixing in bits of pureed veg and then slowly switch over to normal food. Quite a few piggies love their Critical Care and don't like being shifted back! rolleyes

I am glad that your boy is recovering well now! He should hopefully be soon free of pain and back to his normal self.
 
Personally I would ring your vet and ask for it see if they will give it to you without a consultation. They may do.

I was advised this time to give it for 5 days after the op before discontinuing.

It's very scary after they have been done and then don't seem quite right - I sympathise totally!
 
Well he seems totally fine just not eating his food! loves the syringe so going to offer on a plate as suggested! he is a mumy boy so not suprising really! any other tips on getting them back on normal food gratefully recieved

Have you tried tempting him with his absolute favourites? Dill and parsley are often a big hit.

I do find that offering the syringe-feed mash on a plate encourages more independent eating, it doesn't solve the problem of a guinea preferring soft mashed food to solid food, but it does wean him off the complete dependence of a syringe.
 
Just a quick update to let you all know peanut is a bit lighter but back to normal now. He has made full recovery and started eating everything in sight last night. thanks for all your help really appreciated
