sadly Peggy woke yesterday with a red and swollen eye, no crust just a small bit of gunk in her tear drop, going to try and get her to the vet ASAP.

Stupidly I've been reading lots of horror stories on the web about this, does anyone have any experiance with this form of trouble I'm a very very worried piggy owner

This could be anything from your description I'm afraid. Do you have a picture you could post. It is most likely a hay poke injury or conjunctivitis but I wouldn't like to say without seeing it.

Good that you have her seen promptly; that is key for any major eye problem!
How has it gone? Hopefully, it is just a fairly straight forward hay poke.

image.webp We have our appointment tomorrow 9am sharp, my vet wasn't able to squeeze us in and unfortunatly the nearest emergancy vets just isn't do able.

Have attached picture of her eye, I feel so bad:-( wanna cry looking at my poor little Peggy

Aw, dear Peggy! Hope all goes well, you have done the best you can and got an appointment first thing tomorrow. I worry over everything to do with my foster piggies, so you are not alone.

I really hope it's nothing serious, she still eating and popcorning around, I rushed home from work and had her wheeking for me when I walked through the door, I just feel for the vet tomorrow she is known to be a bit feisty at the best of times

Please don't feel bad - you are doing what you can and as quickly as you can get it done. That is what is expected from a responsible owner.

Eye injuries are unfortunately part of piggy ownership over any length of time; they happen to all of us sooner or later. The vast majority are thankfully not so bad that they can't be healed with the appropriate eye drops.

It is very difficult to judge what is exactly going on; only a vet with the right equipment can do that. But take heart from the fact that Peggy doesn't seem too badly affected by it all! ;)

Thankyou for the reassurance weibke, I think you can just never prepare for it being your own.

No, it is always a shock, especially when it happens on a weekend or a holiday (as these things have a tendency to do in my own experience). :(

However, I would recommend to please be careful about looking into too much online advice as it can counterproductive and only serve to panic you. It would be much better for your nerves to see a vet as promptly as possible or to ask us to help you what you can do in the meantime until your piggy can be seen - which you have both done. ;)

Our trip to the vet went very well, overall health check then an intense check of her eye, including dye the vet couldn't see any debris or marks on her eyeball and has prescribed her fucithalmic eye drops to take twice a day.

Surprisingly Peggy was a good girl and loved all the attention she got from all the staff and even gave them all little piggy kisses!

Hopefully we will see an improvement over the next week, we have also got a free checkup next week with her vet to see if it's clearing up.. Phew maybe I can sleep easy tonight now:tu:

That is good news! As she needs fucithalmic only twice a day (it can be given up to four times a day in more severe cases), your vet obviously thinks that it should clear pretty quickly, especially as you have had her seen promptly ;)

If you find it difficult to get the gel into a sore eye, let somebody else distract her with food or hold her. If you have to do it on your own, ist her on your knees, facing away from you and let her scoff a bowl of grass or some favourite veg. Once she is fully absorbed with that, you can then try to sneak your finger in from above and behind. It may still take a few attempts, but piggies generally don't multitask when munching. As the soreness goes down, hopefully within 2-3 days, it is getting a lot easier to get the gel into the eye.
