My pig Pebble is having an operation tomorrow to file down her teeth that have grown wrong. She's very small and thin, and is quite old now at 4 and a half. The vet said she might not come round after. What are the chances of her coming round?

I only took her to the vets today after she wasn't herself for the past few days and she wouldn't eat a thing today. If she doesn't have the operation she'll starve to death, I can't have that so she'd have to be put to sleep :( I want to give her the chance to have her teeth filled first.

The thing is, you are giving her a chance. You have to give them that chance. I had a cat years ago, that had a serious leg injury, I had no money, just moved in to my first house, I had to give him a chance, I paid on credit, it took me months to pay back. In return I got 13 years of love and loyalty from that cat.

I really hope the operation goes well. I do not think four and a half is old. My guinea pig is six and going strong. Good luck.

Hi! Where are you located?

I will keep my fingers crossed for your poorly girl.

Please be aware that dental piggies will not necessarily eat straight away because their mouth is very sore and they often have to relearn to eat. During that time, you will need to hand feed. It would also be good if your asked your vet about how soon after the treatment she can have painkiller and see that she gets it; that is very important. Your vet should also be able to give you a small bag of recovery food to tidy you over until you can get your own.

@furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary

I'm using Avondale vets in Warwickshire.
The vet gave her an injected painkiller today and gave me recovery food for her that I inject in to her mouth with a syringe.
It makes sense how she won't be able to eat straight away.
Thank you :)

Please make use of our hand feeding guide, it tells you how to best go about hand feeding and also how much to hand feed dental piggies.

The best dental vet in the Midlands is Simon Maddock in the Cat&Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton. He does all the piggies for the Excellent Adventure Sanctuary (which mainly cares for guinea pigs with chronic dental issues) and he can do conscious dentals if your older girl needs another round of dental treatment afterwards until she is eating properly again.

Good luck with the dental tomorrow, be sure to ask for some pain relief to give at home after the injection wears off, this can really help as their mouths are sore. It can also be worth getting some Gut Stimulant off the vet also such as Emeprid (Metachlopromide) This will keep things going through the system.

If you have a read of the syringe feeding guide it mentions using a 1ml syringe with the end cut off and filed down, this really makes life easier. We are just coming through the other side of dental problems, I know how stressful it can be. Lots of love and healing vibes to Pebble x

I agree with @sport_billy , please only use a 1ml syringe even if the vet has given you a special syringe feeding one. It is very easy to put too much into the mouth with anything bigger.

Really hope she is ok.

Pebble came out of the anaesthetic ok after a successful operation. However a few hours later she started having fits, she couldn't stop shaking and lost movement of her left side. (While still at the vets) there wasn't anything they could do so she had to be put to sleep. :(

We are all extremely upset about it :'(

I am really sorry to hear this. You did all you could for her. Massive hugs x

Sleep well little one
RIP Pebble
