Hi there
My guinea pig recently has lost weight and I took him to vets and he prescribed baytril just incase he has a URI which he has had before. he's been on the medication for 5 days now and his eyes have sunk but he seems to be drinking ok. I've just brought him inside to monitor him and his belly is gurgling quite loudly. I don't quite no what to do. I don't no if I should put him back outside with his cage mates (which has a thermol cover over) or keep him inside with me still.. He just isn't himself at the moment!

It sounds like a possible case of bloat but you will need to get him to the vets to be certain of right diagnosis. In the meantime try massaging his tummy or if you have the old type electric toothbrushes that vibrate then try massaging his tummy with that. But really a trip to the vets is really needed to get this sorted.

I agree it sounds like bloat, possibly caused by the Baytril if he has not been having any probiotics. A vet visit is needed ASAP. I also recommend the massage mentioned by Stewybus and plenty of fluids. I can post more later on my lunchbreak if you need more info.

Thanks everyone
I'm going to ring the vets soon to see what they say!
Do you no How bloat treated?

Treatment varies depending on the pig and what is causing the issue in the first place. It also depends if it is gas, gut stasis or full on bloat.

In the past my pigs have been treated with Emeprid which is a gut stimulant, fluids (I use Dioralyte as it helps with electrolyte imbalance), Gripe water, pain relief and regular massage of the abdomen.

Is he pooing at all? if so are they usual size?

Has he had any probiotics?

Ok I've rang the vets and he's asked for Darwin to come back in tonight at 6 o'clock, and yeah he is pooing, without being to graphic they are slightly slimmer poos then normal? And a light brown.

What are probiotics? So I'm assuming not. He's been on antibiotic baytril for 5 days now

If they are pale it sounds like something is going on.

This thread has a section on probiotics (they need to be given at least an hour after Baytril to replace the gut flora):

Baytril is notorious for upsetting the gut. Your vet should be able to give you probiotics but if not then Pets at Home sell one called Pro C. Syringe directly into the mouth, don't put them in the water bottle even if the packaging says to.

Okay well my vets is inside pets at home so hopefully they will recommend I get that! Thank you so much for your help :)
I'll take one of his poos to the vets with me so he can see!
