Junior Guinea Pig
So, one of my piggies, Bucky (the one in my picture) has been ill for a couple of weeks now.
It started by him struggling to eat but otherwise he seemed fine. Vet looked him over and pulled a sharp bit of hay out of his mouth but couldn't see anything else wrong with his teeth. He didn't improve and he went back for sedation and a full examination (I had started to syringe feed him by this point). Vet still couldn't see anything wrong with his teeth but he was a bit sneezy so was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory's. Still no appetite from him so he went back again and got some drugs (probiotic and something else) to get his digestion going.
A few times he has seemed to get really excited when we put food in, but so far he's not eaten anything bar a couple of bites of cucumber that we can tell. We stopped his antibiotic (Baytril) as we thought that was causing his appetite for a day but it didn't help and he seemed to get even worse so we put him back on it. Over the last few days he seems to be looking even more lethargic and is still not eating - his weight had stabilised but he lost some more over the weekend. The most we have seen him do is chase his cage mate around to eat his poo a couple of times. His gut does seem to be moving as he had runny poo's at first from the probiotic which have then turned into more normal looking ones but for some reason he is not retaining the nutrients from the food as he has lost muscle mass. I'm still almost convinced it is his teeth. He has gone back to the vet today who is going to x-ray him and take some bloods but if nothing shows up we may have to consider putting him to sleep. We really don't want it to come to that so please send us positive thoughts! I'm hoping the vet will find the cause so we can get on the road to recovery.
