Hi All.

Not posted on here for ages and I mite be shot down for what I post but I will ask opinions anyway...
I at one time had 9 piggies but over the years they have for many reason (mainly old age) died. 2 of then cost me so much at the vets to no avail I had to have them put PTS as they were literally starving to death.

I only have 1 little boy left. he has got an injury under his mouth like a cut downwards probably caused by a foreign object in hay (another story) He is now not eating the vet who i have total faith in said to me "most small animal surgeries like what he needs don't work" Oh what to do... I know it's up to me to say will you PTS or do I throw money into heartache again?

I know it's my decision in the end what would you do?

Sorry didn't make it clear the wound doesn't need stitching its closed around a foreign object apparently which will cause an abcess (maybe a splinter).... I've had a piggie with a mouth abscess which ended up in death and a piggie with tooth problems which caused an abcess. Both didnt survive,, Feel like its De Ja Vue.
Had the wound been open I wouldn't have left it as it was.
I only found the lump as I examined him to see if there was a no eating issue I noticed within an hour he hadn't eaten. the wound was red and scabbyish.

If there is a foreign body in the lump it needs lancing (opening up) and then flushing through. Its an easy enough job under aneathetic. Tooth problems that cause an abcess are completely different to what this sounds like regardless of weather it is in a similar place. I still think that this wouldnt be much of a problem for a good piggie vet so i would get a second opinion and at least pop your pig on a good strong dose of anitbiotics for the time being while this is getting sorted.

Really sorry to hear about your piggie :(:...
Can you say where you are, there maybe a vets close by who are experienced and prepared to do the surgery.
It's not a decision i'd like to be faced with....... GOOD LUCK XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hi Tracy,

I'm new on the forum but wanted to offer my tuppence worth!

I would say if there is definately a foreign body under the skin it has to be removed. It may be a simple job of lancing the area and flushing out the offender as another member suggested but it may also require surgery. It needs to be removed as there will be a high risk of infection.

I totally understand what you mean about vet bills too. At the moment my Hazel has just gone through a two hour ga to remove a bladder stone (took so long due to the blinking stone having wandered away from where it had shown on the xray result). So far is has cost me £321.50 and I still have about £150 to pay. Unfortunately, even though we try our best and spend a small fortune it doesn't always guarantee a good outcome.

I hope your piggy gets well soon:).

Jenny xx
