Hi all, this morning, Oreo who's about 3-4 years, was just sat in the cafe with her head/chin on the floor unable to move. When she did move she seemed to hold up a front leg so at first I thought she'd hurt it. I inspected it and she wasn't tender so I put her back. Then I noticed she was putting that front leg down but she was kind of bunny hopping with her back legs instead of walking. Took her to the vets this aft as I thought she might have had a stroke. Vet said she hadn't and checked her over but can't see anything wrong other than when she checked her ears there was an awful lot of wax in one. Vet is treating her for an ear infection in case it has affected her balance but I'm not convinced. When we left the vets I really thought we were losing her...but kept her warm and syringe feeding her and she's peeked up but she still can't move around. Any ideas please? Taking her back to vets tomorrow but wondering whether I should find a different vets that specialised in GP's? TIA xx

Has the vet checked all the leg joints right up to the spine for a sprain, not just the visible part of the leg? As most of the weight of a guinea pig is actually resting on the front legs, a piggy starts bunny hopping (i.e. using its back legs as springs) whenever it cannot put full pressure on a front leg, so that is normal for a sprain. If it is only a light one, things should normalise within a few days.
It can be that her centre of balance in the ear is affected and accounting for her funny walking. Sometimes it is difficult to tell. I would for the time being follow through with the antibiotic and see whether things settle down over the course of the next half to full week. See your vet promptly if things deteriorate at some point or are still not right after a week.
