Hi I’m new to this but am desperate for advice.
My 5 year old Piggie had a large cyst removed last Tuesday and cam through the op well. She was eating well until Thursday and now seems to have gone off of food completely. She has eaten the odd dandelion or piece of Brocolli but that’s it. She is moving around fine and is interested in stuff but will not eat. The vet said she is very healthy and give her time as it was a big op and she is elderly but surely she needs to take in nutrition? Can anyone offer advice?

You need to start syringe feeding NOW. Her guts will shut down otherwise. There is a complete syringe feeding guide under the guides section at the top of the page under illness and emergencies. Can't link it in on this device. It has been written especially for novices and is easy to follow. Good luck. Let us know how you get on we are here for you. Oh and welcome to our forum!

Hi @Nettyy66!

@Betsy is right, piggies need to eat or else their digestive systems shut down. They're not like dogs, cats or humans who are okay without food for a little while.

They don't simply go off their food, there's always a reason for it. You need to step in with syringe feeding and take her back to a vet if she doesn't start eating soon. There are emergency vets that will see her over the weekend.

Were you given any pain relief for her?

Hi Jaycey no they gave her a 24hr injections but when I took her back to vet Thursday night he said he was wary to give her anymore and she is very alert and moving around. She goes up to her food but then walks away. I am soaking some of her pellets and will syringe these shortly. I am trying to encourage her with her favourites and hope that works too.

Thank you Betsy I am just soaking her pellets and will syringe feed her now. I have just tempted her with a bit of dill and she had a few nibbles so fingers crossed.

Hopefully she will be OK. Somebody will be along soon with more help @Wiebke is good for advice about syringe feeding. I have never had to syringe feed before but just know that it needs to be done in order to save a piggie.

Good advice given already.
Hope it’s just a temporary post op reaction and she starts eating herself soon.
Mushed pellets and baby food or mashed banana are ok for syringe feeding.
Hope she pulls through.
