poorly piggie.

i have a poorly piggy, he is a little over 3 years and i cant get him to the vets before monday. He has started getting mucus, yellow mucus coming out of his little nose and eyes. ive tried the olbas oil and essence of nettle its continuing. he is still chirpy and happy but not eating with as much energy as normal. can any one suggest anything to help before I can get to the vets. He is a free range room piggy indoors. but I'm looking for any suggestions on why this mucus is so bad, he keeps sneezing and its coming out, poor . This page keeps logginf me out or I would write more. any advice folks?

It sounds like your boys has URI (upper respiratory tract infection). The sooner you can have him seen and on antibiotics, the better! An untreated URI will kill.

You can get children's sudafed expectorant from the pharmacy and give him 0.2 ml twice daily. Your vet might also prescribe bisolvon powder which helps whith stubborn mucus. Make sure that you ask your vet.

Thank you. I Have kept pigs for years growing up, But mum looked after poorly pigs whilst I watched. I am an experienced owner as it were.Ive read all the books but peter Gurneys books take pride of place in my room along with 7 piggies roaming free. none of the others have this. he has always been abit snotty,runny, but never like this. but his heart rate is worrying me. He had to have an operation 6months back for a lump under his chin, which didn't cause him any problems for years. But then started to cause breathing problems so had to been seen. I dont like putting pigs under. His teeth had started to overgrow aswell I noticed a few days back , so clipped them back. Just wondered if thats maybe why this mucus could be so bad.

I will try sudafed,I have read that before about sudafed. I gave him Minadex Tonic for a little pick me up but didnt know what else I could use. so wanted to get some advice.

Hi Skitzy, how is your poorly piggie doing?

Agree with the Sudafed Expectorant, that's what I would have recommended to tide you over until you could get to the vets.

Overgrown front teeth are usually a sign that the molars (back teeth) are overgrown. Have you checked them?

I hope that your boy is better today. Either problem can be treated if seen to in time and is no reason for putting a piggy to sleep!
 
He is feeling much better

Hey folks,
just to say thanks for all posts and my piggy seems a lot better. I took him to the vets first thing Monday and got Baytril and eye drops for him. He is looking a lot better and seems a lot happier in himself.
But just wondering if anyone can help me on where the nearest rodentologist is from myself in Devon?

Just to let you know, my piggy is much better. Got him on Baytril and eye drops as of first thing monday. He has perked right up. But still concerned about his teeth. So I'm looking for the nearest rodentologist from myself in devon. Its such a hard course no one in the south west has been able to complete it.
How do you suggest i can check the back molars? he is a VERY tame little piggy and will allow me to do pretty much anything to him. I havent tried the advice of peters, little finger test due to being slightly worried about his breathing and the fact I have not done it before and worried about hurting him. But would give it a go if suggested?
