I have visited 3 different vets and he is now in his second lot of antibiotics, pain relief and homemade syringe food.

He only eats grass when put on the lawn he won’t eat anything else at all.

His weight has been down to as low as 800 grams but I’ve got him to just under a kilo and he’s staying there.

It’s been 3 weeks since he ate properly.

Each vet has examined him and seen no problems with his teeth. He smelt sickly at first (vet 1 said it was the smell of infection) that went and his mouth smelt of poo. He also started grunting like a pig. Both of these have stopped since the second antibiotics but he still won’t eat!

He throws food around but that’s it!

I’m contacting the vet from the locator next week but just wondered if anyone had experienced similar?

Have the vets considered oral thrush and have they checked the back teeth?

Please get hold of hay based recovery formula. Mushed up pellets are OK for only so long as an emergency measure.
You can find information on suitable brands in our syringe feeding guide. Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

I am tagging @furryfriends (TEAS) for you; she runs a sanctuary for guinea pigs with chronic dental problems and has experience with all things that can affect the mouth. Guinea pig dental savvy vets are unfortunately extremely thin on the ground.

It definitely sounds like a dental issue, or maybe oral thrush. Unfortunately very few vets are experienced with issues like this. I appreciate it is a long way, but is there anyway you could bring your guinea pig down to Northampton, to see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic. People travel the length and breadth of the country, with their guinea pigs, to see him, as the gets amazing results with dental problems. It really would be worth the trip, as you would get a definite diagnosis and the correct treatment.

I’m really sorry to say that he passed away last night he had an appointment today at the specialist vets too. I’m heartbroken but thank you for your advice xx
