Little Honkey or as i call him Alfie, is a small black piggie, we don't know his age, or anything, just that's he's a adorable little boy, he was recently adopted by an old man my mum was friends with after living in a 100cm cage with 3 other boars, he now lives with one brother, Snowdrop, the other two are in another cage, Eddie and Ollie, Honkey had a what we thought small cut on his back leg, but expecting it to heal on it's own we had more important things to deal with as he'd been delivered along with 7 girls in a 120 cage, they'd been bred "to see what colours they'd be" so we we're just trying to find stable homes for them all,
Today, the old man called me saying he thinks theres been a bit of fighting as theres some blood in the cage,
They'd been showing some minor dominance behaviour, more towards warning sign than dangerous to me, so i just put it down to the fact i think there in there teenage years and the dominant pig from the group was Eddie who now wasn't with them and they we're what i thought, trying out to be dominant between each other,
When i got to Alan's house, snowdrop was in a box and Honkey in his cage, we took Honkey out and was just checking him over a little, see if there was any wounds etc. But something must have knocked this old wound and blood just poured out of him, all over Alan, the floor, everywhere thats when he went limp and i guessed went in to shock, i tried to keep him warm with a towel and he was only flinching every now and then, after this had to get my mum down and about an hour or so later we we're at the PDSA, he had started to pick up a little but in the car, turning around seemed to much for him as after he had he just fell to his side again and started just scrambling trying to get to his feet but he couldn't,
luckily, the vet came to the conclusion he just had a very deep and big wound that was quite old and he'd caught it on something causing him to bleed, he's now had an injection and his back leg has been shaved to make it easier to clean out the wound etc. He has to be kept in isolation but we've also found out he has lice, which we're getting drops for tomorrow,
As he's in isolation I'm guessing I'm going to have to buddy bath and slowly reintroduce them back together, but i'd really like some tips as I'm just doing this out of knowledge i've gained, I'm planning on one recovered putting them in a run with a partition, then lap time together, then a run with no partition, then maybe back in the cage together with an eye being kept on them, but i just want to know, would this be doing the right thing ?
Honkey will be living in a cat carrier for a little while just so he can't strain himself to much as we have to wait for the infection to clear before they're willing to put any stitch on the wound,
Is there anything else i can do to help him with his strength, these piggies are all that keeps Alan going and i'd hate for him to loose him.
Thanks

So long as he's warm and comfortable and still eating his hay, veggies and pellets/muesli then I don't think you'll need to give him anything extra.

If he has lice I'd treat all the pigs he's been in contact with because it's likley they will have lice too (lice can be treated with a shampoo, I've read that Gorgeous Guineas Lice 'n' Easy is recommended). Along with a thorough cage/bedding clean.

As for reintroductions you'll have to start as though they're strangers and introduce them on neutral ground. Have a read of this thread - http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=38562

Make sure that you weigh him daily to check on his weight/food intake and hand feed him if necessary (up to 120ml in the course of 24 hours). Add a pinch of probiotic, especially if he is on antibiotics!

With a high loss of blood, you want to make sure that he drinks and also has some vitamin C. You can dissolve 1/8 of a vitamin C tablet in 1 or 2ml of water and syringe that for best effect. Don't add anything to the water bottle.

In view of his blood loss, perhaps you want to give him 0.2ml of metatone to perk him up.

Otherwise, keep him warm and comfy and make sure that he is in easy reach of hay.

Best of luck with your poorly boy!
