One of my piggies (Benjamin photoed above) was fine and happy this morning when I sorted them.

Just been to give veg and he cannot stand up, I put veg and water by him and he ate and drank and does not seem to be in pain.

Phoned vet who says start AB's (we have some left from Franklin he says will be fine) and give food and water and pray

:( Get well soon little piggy

PS anyone know what it could be?

Awww poor boy :( I'd get him to a vet asap if I were you. I must admit that I think it's a little harsh the vet telling you to 'pray'. He should have been advising you to make an appointment for him if you're worried about him. Sending hugs your way x

He is going in first thing in the morning (if he is still hear).

But the vet said even if we called him out this evening all he could do would be give AB's (which we are doing). we gave him an examination, chest is clear, no wounds... and so on.

Sorry my vet said it in a kind way the 'pray' bit we are good friends and he has been my vet for 10 or so years and helped with a lot of my rescues. What he meant was basically for Benjamin to go from find and bouncy to this ill in 6 or so hours since I last saw him it will be a case of he will make it or he won't :( and if he seems to be pain free and eating its kinder to keep him hear, warm the stress him by getting him to the vets now in the cold and dark. If he was not drinking he would be in for help but he will happily take veg and water when you put it near his head.

Sorry to hear your piggy's not well. Could it be a stroke or something? Is his head tilted?

Can he feel his feet, if you touch them / pinch the skin?

Fingers crossed for him!

I'm sorry I must have miss read the vets thing :red I really do hope he will be ok. Keep us updated xx

Are his back legs not working. Is he dragging himself around? This is quite a common complaint with piggies and is due to a problem absorbing calcium. You need to buy liquid osteocare, try a local health food shop. The link below will discuss symptoms and how much you need to give him. Off the top of my head I think it's 1ml twice daily for 3 days, then reduce the dose. Usually a quick recovery is made. I know it might look worrying but the piggie is not usually in any pain with this problem. Please don't be talked into anything by your vet. At least give this a go first. Let us know how he gets on.

Been to vets and its a stroke :( he gave him a good exam and even showed me the muscle weakness on one side of the body. He was in no pain but would not have made a full recovery and may not have made much recovery at all. Plus a further stroke (which is common) could have killed him or caused him more distress.

Sat out the back of the vets (in the staff room) with a nurse for a good time deciding what to do. They offered to take him in and try and help him but said it may just cause him more distress and pain.

In the end I made the decision to have him put to sleep.

I know some of you may say this was the wrong thing to do but I could not see him like that, I did not want him poked and prodded with drips and force fed to try and get him better when the chances of him making a full or even good recovery were so slim.

Strokes are a freak of nature and little can be done to reverse the damage in a lot of cases. He was tired and needed to go to sleep. It in my eyes would have been cruel to put him through everything for little chance of recovery.

Bye bye Benjamin sleep well and you will be very missed. :(

I am so sorry to hear your news :0 You didn't do anything wrong as you no your piggy best and you did what was best for him which must have been a very difficult decision :( Thinking of you and sending hugs. Bye bye Benjamin. Sleep peacefully x

Don't feel bad about the decision you made.
I would of done the same thing if i was in your shoe's.
At the end of the day it's what is best for your pet, yes it is hard for us to cope but at least your pet isn't in pain and suffering.
Some day we all meet again.

Take care.

Aww, hugs for you... I know how hard a decision it was, but you did the right thing. He's running free at the Rainbow Bridge now, with so many new friends to look out for him. Don't feel guilty xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
