please help I'm new to this but i have 2 male guinea pigs about 3 and a bit years old and in excellent health until today! i put them out on the grass as usual and was 20 mins picking up my daughter when i returned 1 guinea pig was trying to lay on his side and twitching, i also noticed whitish liquid around his mouth and he seemed disoriantated annd the other pig seemed fine. i rushed the sick pig to the vet and he checked him over and he seemed to perk up so brought him home and put him back with his mate(who was very pleased to see him and they had a cuddle and sleep. now he seems to have gone down hill again and is making small funny noises and now his mate (who squeaks all the time even when his walking or your stroking him has stopped doing so and seems subdued) please help these 2 delightful little pigs belong to my very worried 9 year old daughter!

sorry if this is long winded.:(

Oh dear. Was there any chance the grass had weed killer or dog urine on it? I really think you need to get them seen by a vet now. Maybe the vet you took them to today was not so knowledgeable about guinea pigs.

no the grass is clean they have been mowing it for over a week bless them. pig 1 is not eating and hunched up in the corner and cant seem to get comfortable the noise is like when you have stomach gripes and it makes you wince and groan but in guinea pig noises. and pig 2 (the squeaker) is eating but i dont know why he has stopped squeaking. thank you for answering so quickly.

If you phone your vet there should be an oncall vet available to discuss this with - I think you need to get a trained view on what to do next. You may get an answer phone message with the number for the emergency vet to call.

Sounds like he's eaten something but definitely check with the vets. Are there buttercups or anything that's poisonous to pigs in amongst the grass?
Good luck, I hope he's ok.

spoke to the vet last night and they advised to just keep an eye on him ...... so stayed up all night but fell asleep and woke up to two very happy pigs..... one with his squeek back ( i think he was just keeping the noise down ) and the other stuffing his face and very alert .............. weve tryed to go over what he could have eaten that would disagree with him and it could possible be red robin leaves that had blown in to there outside enclosure ?

Thank you for all the advice !

I'm glad he's a bit better, I was wondering how he was doing. I hope whatever caused it is out of his system but I would still keep an eye on him for the next day or 2 just to be on the safe side.
Would be worthwhile to check there are no weeds that are poisonous to pigs around their grazing area.
Anyway I hope that's him on the mend again :)

GOSH what a fright you've had! :...
I'm so so glad to hear your little boar is doing well now x)
Also welcome to you, your daughter and the boys to the forum :)
When everything has settled down please pop some pigtures into our stories/photo's section whee love to drool at everyones piggies! Oh and tell us what their names are too :)
Gut issues in a piggie can be very very dangerous, i've just gone thru some really tough times with one of my girls, i wish whee had vets like you guys do in the UK who'd allow more drugs to help. THankfully i had some brilliant advice from people on here which saved my girl!
