Hi guys as you all know pixie had abscesses, I made a appointment last week for today to have a operation to have them removed, she has been on baytril and metacam for a while now and the lumps are still there and more lumps have developed, the vets checked her and they’r tumours! 😭 they could of operated but it will only come back they gave me some options, 1. Operate 2. Make her comfortable see how she gets on 3. Let her go to sleep. Obviously I’ve asked how can I make her comfortable, they have given me metacam for pain, baytril and emeprid to help her appetite so she’s not completely starving like Jaffa did, I’ll be taking her back next Thursday at 10:20 to see how she’s doing and if she’s not doing good they’ll be sending her to rainbow bridge šŸ’”šŸ˜ so I’m going to make my home guinea pig proof from all the gaps and wires and let them all run around with plenty of treats and more attention

@kkewharding94 Would it be work asking the vet to recheck the lumps? Abscesses are notorious for refilling if they've not be emptied completely, and if they're not flushed daily after surgery. Are you flushing them?

She was meant to have a operation to get them out today, but because she’s been on antibiotics and metacam for over 2 weeks and they haven’t budged plus she had a puncture wound near where these lumps are and I have been cleaning inside of it with F10 on ear buds at least 3x a day, she had 2 lumps 2 weeks ago both right where her nipples are and now she’s got another 2 lumps, she’s loosing her appetite and 1 of her back legs slowly giving up, if you think I need a second opinion and examination please tell me because I really don’t want her to be put down if these things she has isn’t life threatening x

I am so very sorry! That is the kind of diagnosis we all dread.

You can also support feed with a mix of mushed up pellets and recovery formula or porridge oats to keep up her weight up for as long as possible, but I would recommend to only feed from a spoon or a bowl.
The day Pixie is not interested in food anymore means that her quality of life has gone and her pain/discomfort are winning out. I do this with guinea pigs of my own on terminal care. Finding the right balance between support top-up feeding and keeping it going for too long is a very fine one. Over a longer period I have found that this way of feeding is a fairly useful indicator at how long to keep it going.

Thank you, I have a blender and I still have critical care sachets from when I had Jaffa so I’m prepared x

Just see whether she likes the sachets as they are or if not, blend them with more familiar mushed pellets. Not every piggy likes the taste of recovery food. You just work out what goes down best for as long as possible. ;)

Aww, it sounds like she's very much in the wars bless her. You know her best so only you will know if it's worth perusing with a different vet or if it's time to let her go.

My motto is "better a day too early than too late" and will always opt to say goodbye if they're suffering. But if they seem happy and bright then I can be quite stubborn and will issue second and even third opinions so I can either help my pig recover or at least not feel as guilty if I do have to say goodbye.

I've found that pigs love critical care for about 1 syringe full then they hate it. Most prefer softened nuggets so you can try that. Keeping the tastes different helps, so mixing in a little bit of baby food to some of it can keep them interested.

Thank you everyone, I’ll see how she until tomorrow and if she seems okay I’ll take her to a different vets but if not then the plan for next week will go on šŸ˜”šŸ’”

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry! she sounds like she is being very well taken care of and if she is to be sent to piggy heaven, just remember of the long happy and beautiful life you gave her! Sending healing vibes xx
