Hi, I'm really worried about my piggy Red. She's three and a half plus, and generally well but beginning to show her age. Today she was making some strange whimpery squeaky noises. I picked her up and underneath she quite swollen around her bottom/genital area. It's red and the skin looks a bit broken, and maybe weepy. She's very wet. I'm going to take her to the vets asap, but in the mean time does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Really having a week of poorly guineas, Hector last week, Red today, it's normally like this!

I'm sorry to hear Red is poorly. A UTI perhaps? The vet should be able to diagnose the problem. Until you get to the vets you could try cranberry juice which may help if it is a UTI. Others may be able to offer more constructive advice. Poor wee piggie. SEnding healing vibes..

All I can do is echo what Farquhar said, as apart from a possible UTI I'm not sure what it could be

Hope red feels better soon!

AWW Honey I also am thinking UTI but am not very knowledgable and hope you get someone on who can tell you a bit more.

Hope red gets better soon.

i echo what every one else is saying i have had my piggy ruby at the vets today ad she has been diagnosed with cystitus same symptoms as your piggy has i would get her to the vets

In the meantime, cranberry juice will help give some relief.

Thanks all

I was thinking cranberry juice because it would at least be some extra vit c and at best help relieve the symptoms. I do feel so bad for her, she looks quite uncomfortable. between her and Hector, we've a poorly lot, keeping an eye on the other four, in case these things really do come in threes, half expecting a case of mites or a cold on the way!

Give her as much to drink (by syringe) as she can take (water, cranberry juice), even if it is painful to pee; it will help to flush it out.

If the diagnosis is cystitis or UTI, ask your vet for pediatric septrin 0.5 ml twice daily instead of baytril 0.4 ml. Make sure you are given a painkiller and probiotics as well to keep your girl and her guts as comfy as possible.

Wishing you the best for your trip to the vets!

Thanks. She's still eating well, so at least i can count on that to take her mind off it. Fingers crossed she will be back to normal soon...

I agree, it does sound like it could be cystitis. Try and clean her rear end up a little, after which you could apply a thin layer of Bepanthen (baby nappy rash cream) to soothe and protect the skin. It could be urine scald which may be due to the cystitis.

Here is the link to UTI's: http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

Pediatric Septrin is the only form of bactrim (as mentioned in there) that can be given orally. If necessary print out when you go to the vets. Spetrin is epsecially good with cystitis and less harsh on the guts. Because of the banana flavour, most pigies like it and willeven like the syringe clean!

well we've been to the vets he said it's the beginning of urine scald and it's not progressed to far so should be easy to clear up. Bathing twice a day with gel. I have to hold red for about quarter of an hour after putting the gel in so it can soak in and she can't lick it off. So, had a bath whilst boiling water was cooling, and now sat down with her. Bathed .her, put get on and settled down for cuddle. And then red ate a big chunk of my hair. And won't stop licking and chewing my fingers. She has a taste for pantene!

Good to hear the vet has been able to help some. What's the gel called, out of interest?

Off the top of my head I think it's fuciderm or somethign like that
