My poor roger inexplicably sprained his leg in his cage while we were gone about a week ago. We separated him from George, and put him in the hospital cage so he could rest it. At first he wasn't using it at all. Now he is starting to put weight on it, and I saw him scratch himself with it. Good news, right? Well I checked on him today and noticed he has lost weight, which I'm at a loss because he's been eating like a pig (forgive the pun...), drinking, pooping, all normal. Still losing weight though? We recently switched their food, so we thought that might have something to do with it? Also, could it be possible that he's losing weight because he hasn't been using his leg very much? (OH thought it might be some muscle loss?) Either way, I forsee a vet visit. In the meantime, could anyone offer insight/suggestions? Also healing vibes are always appreciated. Thank you.

I've no idea what's happening with Roger but a vet visit definitely sounds in order. Sending massive healing vibes from down under piggies Hazelnut and Peanut Butter. Hope to hear a good prognosis after the vet visit.

Thank you. That's all i want too (a good prognosis, that is). He's such a sweet pig, and it would gut me if anything bad happened...8...

ohhhhh Rodger sweetie, big hugs and chin tickles from me and the furry brood x

Many piggies are not happy when being separated and can lose weight - you can't see how much hay they are eating and that should make the biggest part of their diet. How big is the weight loss actually? 1 oz can be down to just an empty bladder/tummy; 2 oz mean you should go on alert and weigh daily, with 3 oz you need to see a vet asap.

Hopefully, the sprain will heal soon.

Thanks Wiebke, thats good to know that weight loss can be due to being separated. The reason why he was separated is because I want him to rest it, and he was having trouble walking on the bedding, so we put him on fleece. Unfortunately I don't know the exact amount he has lost because we have an old baby scale that isn't digital. But it was enough that I noticed it by holding him. He has been eating a lot of hay, pellets, and veggies, and pooping normally, which is why I thought weight loss was weird. Do you know how long it can take for a sprain to heal? It's been about a week, and he's making slow progress.
