Poorly Roy.

Hi everyone,

I posted a question on here the other day about my guinea pig Roy losing weight and drinking more. I think I put it in the wrong section (I put it in the welfare section! mallethead)

Just to update I have now taken Roy to the vets. His blood sugar levels were normal so it's not diabetes. The vet think's he may have kidney disease.

He's given Roy a course of antibiotics which I think was more of a just incase sort of thing and has said if they don't work I can bring him in for blood tests to confirm the kidney disease. Although if the tests come back as positive theres nothing that can be done 8... So I'm not sure I want to put Roy through the stress of having blood taken if the antibiotics don't work.

As someone mentioned in my other thread I think I might try and contact Vedra at the Cambridge cavy trust for advice but was wondering if anyone has had a piggy with kidney disease and what I can expect to happen?

I'm sorry to hear this. Did the vet do a urine test? High levels of protein in the urine can indicate kidney issues.

He tried to but Roy wasn't having any of it so he couldn't in the end. Maybe that's something I could consider if the antibiotics don't work rather than getting them to take blood. Thanks!

To be honest I don't think anything can really be done for kidney issues, certainly nothing that I am aware of myself other than ensuring he continues to drink well. It doesn't necessarily mean your time with him is limited to the near future, but it's something to bear in mind. The use of any medications for any illness would be considered more carefully for example.
