Hi
I had sally my rescue sow two weeks ago.She has been fine and yesterday i noticed some diorrhea ...not sure on spelling ..:)
She seemed ok little quiet but eating.I put her on hay and water and gave diocalm as piggy potion book.
I checked her at 5pm and to my horror found blood all on her hay and bleeding from her vulval area !
Rushed her to vets and they think she has picked up infection ? uterine ? bladder.
Vet gave her good check over and was sure it wasnt coming from rectum but vaginal area and runs could be reaction to some infection.She is not pregnant and had never been with a boar until 2 weeks ago when she moved in with my neutered boar Dylan -he is 5 weeks post op.Vet gave her IV antibiotics and analgesia and she is due back tomorrow.
Today she seems bright and has had no further active bleeding and just has clot by vagina.Her stools are still bit loose but not runny.
Been stressful few days lost my boar Harvey after his neuter op...first time after 5 boars no problem.So i really need good news right now !

Hope Sally gets better soon, and I hope it is just an infection, poor girl. I am off to the vets this afternoon with my sow Rosie, she is passing blood in her water, fingers crossed that too is an infection.
 
I'm sorry she's not well, I agree that an infection is probable. I'd initially suspect a gut infection due to the diarrhoea as I don't think urinary/bladder/uterine infections will cause this symptom. I may be wrong, it just makes more sense that the two symptoms are combined; my thought is that an infection elsewhere that is advanced enough to lead to diarrhoea would also be rendering the pig in a poor condition.

It sounds like the vet is doing good in terms of getting her on antibiotics and painkillers; I would hope that Sally is put on a course of oral antibiotics and painkiller/anti-inflammatories to ensure that, if it is an infection, it is properly treated.

Be sure she gets plenty of water - rehydration solution (e.g. Dioralyte) if possible.

Fingers crossed for her. It's great that she is bright, I hope she stays that way. :)

Hello all
Thanks for good wishes Sally is on the mend.She was much better yesterday and poop is now back to soft pellets.
No further bleeding and she is eating dry food and hay.She had a poo occult test done which was neg so vet thinks it was PV or UTI.Wee sample has been sent.
She is cuddled up with Dylan and is on baytril 0.2ml for 5 days twice daily.
Hope she is going to be ok she is lovely sow

Glad she's doing much better now - fingers crossed this improvement continues and she's back to her usual self soon x
 
Sallys bum situation

:(Sally is ok in herself but still having loose stools.Have i started veg too soon ?
She had baytril for 5 days that fin over week ago.Today she is bright and wants to eat ! but has diaorhea again.Its not offensive just runny.
I have put her back on hay and water only and Dylan her hubby is having meals separatly.
Any advice what else to do ?

I would cut out the veg again.

Baytril can also upset piggy tummies, did your vet give you a probiotic to go with it?

If not ask for some Fibreplex this comes in big syringe and is a paste, its a probiotic, prebiotic and fibre mix so really good for firming up loose poops. The vet should be able to tell you what dose to give as I cant remember.

The other thing you could try is giving her banana this helps firm up poops.

Hope she is better soon

could you put her on probiotics and maybe ask the vets for a gut stimulant its poss the baytril has affected the flora in her gut and slowed her digestion down,, ive seen this a lot in guineas after they have finished the baytril another thing how is she eating does she seem to be opening her mouth wide when she is eating or have exaggerated ear movement?this could indicate teeth problems xx

Well sally had little bum wash last night and was not happy at all about no veggie snacks but i was strong and just gave extra hay.
Pleased to say dry bum this morning still evidence of soft stools but not runny.She has had very small amount of pellets this morning which she dived into but that will be it apart from hay.Will keep you posted
