I cannot believe I am typing this. I discovered my 3 year old Sergei had not eaten his veg overnight yesterday morning. He then failed to touch his fresh guinea pig nuggets . He was very quiet and did not move round as normal, I could see he had hardly done any poops. I kept an eye on him all day. I cleaned his cage out to monitor his poop output. He did a few mini poops not the usual normal size. I started to syringe feed him yesterday. Critical Care Fine blend. He did take some. I also had to feed him his water. I arranged a vets appointment this morning. The vet says he has gas but it's not in his stomach. It's in his ileus. The vet recommended a x ray under GA to check for blockage and or teeth problems. So I have left poor Sergei in the care of the vets and will pick him up on Friday as I work Thursday and Fridays. I hope all goes well with the GA and I get him back home.

Your vet is right to do an xray as it is essential to rule out a blockage before starting on massage therapy or if they want to give gut stimulants etc. I hope the vets are able to get the gas to disperse, I swear by Gripe water in addition to any prescribed meds and massage therapy and fluids.

Oh no Val! You are having such bad luck at the moment. I will think positive thoughts for you both. I'm so sorry you are facing this, how worrying.

Cassandra

I am quite concerned as I always thought Sergei was the healthiest of all my 4. He has a cage mate in the adjoining C and C run as their bonding failed. Young Amos is very quiet as he is normally rumblestrutting at Sergei so he is obviously missing Sergei already.

Thanks Cassandra. I don't seem to be able to relax at present. I have to take my elderly mother to the hospital this afternoon as she suffers from dementia and couldn't get her hearing aid repaired without me explaining things to the hearing aid technician. I am taking Poppy my dog to the hydrotherapist tomorrow and will pick her up on Friday after work. But I am so relieved Rupert has made a full recovery after his infection. So I hope Sergei does likewise.

I'm very glad that Rupert is fully better.
My mother had a bad fall at the weekend, she broke her arm, nose, did something to her knee and her face is so swollen. She has osteopeania so breaks easily. Its very worrying. So I can sympathise! I also feel completely wound up at the moment. Its a horrible feeling isn't it.
Its a huge shock when your "healthy" pig suddenly becomes ill - of Toffee and Ripple I would have said every time that Toffee was the strongest, healthiest pig :( Has he ever had an episode of bloat before? And could you trace it to anything (though I'm sure you would not have fed lots of brassicas or grass suddenly anyway)

Get well soon, Sergei and dont scare your mum!x

Aw Val, so sorry to hear your little one is poorly. Sounds like your vet is well on the ball with an xray. Let us know how he gets on. Huge hugs and healing vibes to Sergei x

I got 2 phone calls from the vet whilst I was at the hospital. On the first the vet said he was worried about Sergei as although he had come through the GA he wasn't responding like he should. The vet had done blood tests and discovered his liver wasn't functioning properly. I authorised him to do a catheta. However about an hour later I got a 2nd call telling me Sergei had died. The vet did say he normally did not have any problems with GA for healthy guinea pigs. He asked if he could check inside Sergei to see if he could find the exact cause, maybe a blockage. He apologised and was obviously upset by this. However I do believe that Sergei must have had an underlying problem that has quickly got worse. And I think I would rather let him go like he did than him come home and have a long lingering end. But I do still wish he was here - but 100% healthy.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear this poor piggie and my heart goes out to you it really does. Pocorn over the bridge little one. Hugs and wheeks from myself and my boys Murray and Jack xx

Oh no, I am so sorry, what a terrible shock Val. Lots of love and hugs to you, we are all here for you x

Sleep well Sergei
x x

I'm so sorry, it does sound like there was an underlying problem.

If the vet did do the post mortem it can help with closure as you would know exactly what was wrong.

Thanks so much for your messages. I still cannot believe what has happened. Sergei had never had bloat before. He got the same vegetables as my other 3. I never overfed them with kale broccoli etc. The only thing Sergei had treatment for prior to this was with invermicin (don't know spelling). He was a lovely quiet cuddly guinea pig and I'll miss him.

Oh Val.... of course you did not over feed him on the wrong kind of vegetables. It is just a very sad event. I know that (like me) you want answers and there is a tendancy to blame yourself but you honestly did everything you could and he had the very best of care.

((hugs)) it must have been awful to get that call whilst you were at the hospital with your mum.

Thanks Cassandra @Goth Mummy. You will know exactly how I feel. It is a terrible feeling. Whilst I was at the hospital my mother mentioned I had guinea pigs. The hearing aid technician mentioned she liked guinea pigs (a response I did not expect). She said she looked after two that her friend had. I explained I was waiting a phone call from the vets but things didn't look good. She hugged me. It helps when others understand what you are going through doesn't it. Take care. Val

I do understand, completely, its a horrible feeling, you feel so desolate and it is also a lonely feeling as most people do not understand that you can be as attached to a guinea pig as you can to a dog or cat. It is less socially acceptable to be sad about a guinea pig.
Take care of yourself too. How is Rupert today?

HUGS

I am so sorry that there was an underlying problem or a blockage; it always comes as such a shock. You have done your best.

I hope that Rupert is OK?

Thanks for all the support it does help.
My Rupert is thriving thanks. He now has a really cheeky look on his face and is chasing his cagemate Maxwell again. It's really good to have my 3 guinea pigs to help take my mind occupied. You cannot ignore a guinea pig!
