Our piggie Trevor was very lethargic on Sunday and not eating much so we took him to the vets that day.

She gave him a thorough check and looked at his teeth as much as she could and couldn't see any problems. She advised that if he didn't pick up to bring him back in and she'd have a better look at his back teeth under mild sedation.

Happily, he has picked up a lot and is up and about a lot more and eating bits and pieces. He's even started squeaking for food when we rustle bags. However I'm concerned that he's not eating as much as usual. He will eat a bit of something and then seem to just lose interest.

I'm worried because I have read that it's very dangerous for piggies to not eat enough, even for a short period. But am I worrying too much? What's the expected recovery time for a piggie under the weather?

(We've also separated him from Simon his room-mate temporarily so that we can monitor his food and poo and so that Simon doesn't try and play with him while he's ill, but their cages are together so they can hopefully see and hear each other there).

I think he needs to go back to the vet for a proper diagnosis, there will be a reason he is not eating properly, it could well be his back teeth, it could be something else, and yes it id dangerous for piggies not to eat, their teeth will overgrow and their digestive systems will slow down and pack up, has he lost any weight?

Please take him back to the vets, with a wee sample if possible. Trust me, it is better to nip this in the bud and get it treated before things get worse.

xx

Ps i doubt separating him from his cage mate will help, he will be lonely and wondering what is going on, sometmes their pals can stimulate them.

Thank you. I will put them back together and see about taking him back to the vet.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Your welcome sweetie.

Sadly time is one thing we dont have when our piggies become poorly and especially when they stop eating, they go downhill so quickly, I hope its something simple like his back teeth, i hope they can just be trimmed/filed and be on his way again, but (sorry to repeat myself) you need to get it checked out before all of his teeth overgrow and cause bigger problems, resulting in him having to have full on surgery and a longer recovery and lots of round the clock feeding, or his digestive system packs up. Or if its some infection, you want to get the correct AB's and get it treated.

Hopefully being with his friend again will help

Hi,

Took him back to the vets and she is pleased with Trev's progress. It doesn't look like a problem with his teeth as he is eating normally.

Trev is pretty much back to his old self, he is running round with Simon and spending a lot of time in his favourite place- next to the food bowl!

We're so pleased. No idea what the problem was so keeping a careful eye on him.
