Well another first on Saturday at 11pm,found Amber squeaking and on examination she had a urethral swelling,a stone was in the entrance !:{
What an awkward decision to make so with a little KY and very gentle manipulation i managed to pop it out.
Thats a first and all my piggies have bladder friendly diets so just proves these things can happen. We have sorted her with pain relief and anti b cover.
Amber is fine

Oh well done!

I give up with bladderstones...seems nothing can 100% guarantee prevention and I have just gone through hell with a piggy post op.

The day I lost a beautiful girl to stones (after an op) this time last year, another of my sows was lying asleep and I noticed something sticking out from her lady parts. On closer inspection it was a huge stone which she was easily passing! Just a little bit of vaseline and some coaxing and out it popped. The timing was just dire considering I had just lost my girl to stones and I just could not believe it. It was however softer than the other's stones so that I am sure helped. I am starting to build a collection of stones my husband thinks I should frame them! :...

I HATE STONES 8...

wow, well done, poor Amber, hope shes ok now.

I hate stones too, seems we are mostly all touched by them at some point :(

Well done Amber! :)

Do all piggies get stones once in their lifetime?

Also, are there any preventions? Do they happen because of 'crystalisation' or is that what the stones are called? (just remembered something from my book..)
Does it happen because the guinea pig had too much vitamin C?

Sorry for all the questions!

Aw poor love. Well done for getting it out! Hope she recovers quickly.
I agree stones are horrid :(

Re your question 'do all guineas get stones in their lifetime?'

Well I blooming well hope not as I am giving up now :))

No not all do and I personally think its a lot to do with their make up, how they process minerals, inbreeding, and whether or not they are good drinkers.

I have six all on Ratewatchers diet (special food plan to reduce the instance of stones) they are all on filtered water. 2 have had bladderstones and four so far hav'nt. I have also lost another to stones last year.

I think if we knew what caused them and a cure you'd be very popular :-)

If you are worried then have a look at the Ratewatchers food plan (see below) and filter their water but there's not much more you can do really.

Some people have lots of piggies who have them and others just don't. I know of a rescue that has nearly a hundred guineas and rarely has a bladderstone issue, then you get people like myself who seem to be plagued by them. It woudl be great to do a survey actually to see if there is a pattern at all? Umm something to think about when I get the time.

This is a useful read:

Forgot to mention..if you do want to follow the ratewatchers plan I have put together a useful spreadsheet to help you work out the amounts...all you do is plug in the number of guineas and you have the weights. Just PM me if you want a copy....can you tell I have become OCD about stones?

Thank you for answering my questions!

I do not have any piggies yet would have been a miracle to know a cure!

Perhaps that survey will be a good idea, but I do wonder if it is to do with a certain type of guinea pig breeds or what they eat and if their water is filtered etc. Many variables to think about ?/

The stones sounds very distressing and I can only pray I do not have to deal with seeing my future piggie in pain. I'm a really big wimp, I would be crying all day and night!:red

Yes thank you! I shall PM you now! I think the more prepared I am for it, I will feel better about keeping guinea pigs :)

Good idea :-)

I do think all the massive overbreeding also contributes to it. I will work on a survey as I think maybe we could start to see a pattern if nothing else..it does seem odd that it seems to effect some and not others.

yes it is incredibly stressful seeing them in pain...absolutely awful. The only thing that has kept me sane recently is this forum :)) I am also now addicted to Bachs Rescue Remedy :))

Wow! Thank you so much for the spreadsheet, that is sooo very helpful! I have become a fan also lol :))
