Well luckily today I am off work on annual leave (despite a brilliant start of being up for 3 hours in the night with a bad stomach!) because I noticed that Pete looked "wet" on his side where he has a sebaceous cyst... closer inspection I was hoping it was something else but there was most definitely pus on his fur...

So I made a saline solution and have cleaned the area as well as I can, a small amount of pressure to get as much pus out of it as possible and trimmed the fur around it to stop it all sticking and matting. There is only a very small hole where the pus is coming out and it's on his back so hopefully it will be ok. Other than checking him daily and cleaning it every day is there anything else that I can do?

My reluctance to go vets - for those who don't know the background. Peter is on daily metacam and has been since January. When I went back after 3 months for more meds the vet was very surprised that he was still going. He is over 6 years old and has quite a number of fatty lumps which are causing him issues. As a result I don't want to take him vets unless absolutely necessary as I don't want him stressed out too much.

Have you got any f10 ointment? My vets gave me some when we had a cyst burst. I was told to flush it out daily and apply some f10 ointment.

I don't Vicki but certainly can have a look at getting some. Luckily it is on his back so quite high up from the ground which means the chance of it being dragged through pee and poop is very much minimised. I cleaned it again today and more pus came out but the skin is all loose around it now so assuming most of it has come out. I tell you something... I think I'd rather deal with impaction than this!

One of my boys had one on his side for years. We used to clean it when it burst and it usually closed over after a few days, then it would be fine for months.

We eventually decided to have it removed only due to it's size, it never caused him an pain and he didn't bother with it, it just got too big for my liking.

Hopefully it should settle down in a week or so.

Sounds gross. Well done!

Thanks, due to his age and overall health I won't be going down the route of having it removed. It's not causing him any pain (although he's on daily metacam so that's likely helping) and he doesn't seem that bothered when I clean it. Hopefully it heals over then without complications so he can carry on as he is.

Poor little Petey is doing really well now, hardly anything came out the last couple of days and the lump has all gone. He seems his normal chipper self but now I have noticed the lump under his chin has tripled in size.... still praying that isn't an abscess!

I'm glad it's settled down. Fingers crossed that it doesn't come back for a lonnnnng time.

The one under his chin does sound like an abscess. I found that the cyst of my piggy didn't grow that quickly, whereas abscesses can grow very quickly.

He's had the one under his chin for the past 8-10 months (it was there in January when he first started on the metacam) it has slowly got a little bigger but it's only the last week or so that it's got a lot bigger, quicker. Still will keep my fingers crossed for no complications but if that bursts he's definitely going to the vets lol

Ah right, sorry I didn't realise the time frame.

Fingers crossed that it doesn't get any bigger!

Bit of a random request but do you have any progress pictures of the healing one? Fudge has a cyst about to pop at any minute.. I'm already armed with hibiscrub but hoping to manage it at home due to stress affecting her current gut issue aswell as her ongoing heart problems, which my vet agrees with. Not looking forward to the squeezing etc, poor girl cant catch a break!
