Hi all. Just looking for some advise. Woke up this morning and my guinea pig is making a popping sound when he breathes. It isn’t constant but it’s regular enough for me to be a little concerned. I’ve listened to his chest and it sounds fine and not cracking at all so I’m just a bit confused. Could it just be some snot in his nose making the noise when he breathes. My only other thought is could it be the cold, it was -4 last night and he lives in our conservatory but I had the heater on and it was warm enough when I went it last night and this morning to check. Maybe the moisture in the air from the cold could’ve bothered him? I’ve checked for vets appointments and the vet we usually see hasn’t got any for a week, we’ve had bad experiences with others vets so tend to be reluctant to book unless it really is an emergency. Obviously I know uri and other infections can be serious so don’t want to sit on it for too long. Would it be okay to see how he goes the rest of today and maybe book an appointment for tomorrow or do you think he needs seeing today. (Only appointment they have is 6pm) Also wary that I don’t want to take the appointment off someone who may really need it for today but I’m just not sure how serious this is. Thanks

Hi

Hold your ear to the nose and see whether it comes from there. Nasal sounds are usually not to worry about because the sinuses are very narrow so that even the tiniest obstruction can cause quite some alarming sound. Most of them disappear within hours, often after a major nose clearing sneeze. Please keep in mind that the indoors air is suddenly a lot drier because of the current cold wave and increased heating.

Try and see whether a bowl of steaming water next to the cage can additionally help.
