Poppy has been arching her back and squeaking while peeing for the last 2 days so managed to get an appointment this morning at vets 4 pets. I've agreed for her to stay there for an xray. I've been giving her 0.4ml of metacam twice a day (which hadn't been much help) and the vet told me on the phone I'm overdosing her. I argued that fuzz, the cagemate who went with her was on 0.6ml twice a day when she had back pain and she said she shouldn't have been prescribed that much. They should only have it once a day not twice and not that high a dose. I explained that they have fast metabolisms and can tolerate it but she argued they'd get problems having that much. I was reluctant to leave her there as I was very angry her telling me that but with the lock down I can't be so choosy. I'd rather go to the cat and rabbit clinic but I understand they're on holiday at the moment.

I do hope the X-ray comes back clear and perhaps it’s just a UTI.
These are difficult times. I think we all have to muddle through as best we can until some normality is returned, so using a local vet is the best option for now. And you’ve had piggies long enough to make your own decision about dosing Metacam once you are back home. Hugs

I know exactly how you feel @Gem789 Hope this vet is more competent than she sounds. Simon and Kim are back next week. Hope Poppy is ok x

Thank you, she is the same vet, that I took my late georgie to for a uri and asked for a different antibiotic than baytril and cat metacam and she said well if he gets worse maybe we can try something else. He ended up so weak and flat by the time I got him seen at the cat and rabbit clinic that Kim offered to take him to hers for the night and he passed away there :(

Oh no, that’s just so sad!
She doesn’t sound good at all, the trouble with this lock down many of the vets are not working or they are only working on rota so you can’t book a particular vet, you are just happy to get seen. Most vets are also only taking pets that are registered with them.
I have an appointment next week, PM if you need it as I don’t think we can take Ted, his incisors are too short that’s the problem there.

I'm lucky that poppy is already registered but I really wasn't happy the way she argued with me on the phone about the metacam even though I was keeping calm and explaining why I gave that dose. I ended up just going uhumm near the end as I was so angry and didn't want to have a proper argument. It's a tough situation at the moment xx

That's so kind of you to offer your appointment, I couldn't take that away from you though xx

Yes, I feel bad for Ted but it’s the best I could have done. It’s cost a fortune which shows money doesn’t buy you the best care either. This vet left me Emeprid and the bag was damp because the bottle was not screwed on tight, can you believe it, so only 2/3rds of what should have been given

Sending Popy healing vibes. Sending hugs to you, the metacam dosage debacle is so hard. I've had run ins with vets too when I can't get to see my prefered ones, it's got worse since they licensed cat metacam.

Yes, and the new boxes actually say Metacam for Cats and Guinea Pigs! Madness, they could at least make it a third of the price

Poppy hasn't got bladder stones which I'm relieved about. The vet said something about a hook on her spine? Maybe arthritis? They're ordering tramadol for me(I was surprised she even mentioned that considering her thoughts on metacam) . In the mean time they haven't gave me anything else so I'll continue with the metacam dose I was giving.

I'm afraid I can’t comment on the hook on the spine but I am glad she doesn’t have bladder stones x

i hope poppy makes a good recovery . i wish vets would have extensive training on cavies.I'm a qaulified nurse and i would not be so ignorant to not listen to my patients.if i was ever not sure of something i would team up with my collegues. it is the animal/patient that has compromised care. hugs to you Gemma,we are facing difficult times.

So glad Poppy hasn’t got stones bless her. How blooming frustrating about the vet, I’d definitely carry on what you’re giving her metacam wise too, a couple of my local vets are similar! I just smile and nod and carry on with doses Simon’s told me in the past! Trust him and Kim far more!
Hope Poppy feels better soon and the tramadol helps when you get it, hope you can find out what’s going on with her spine too. And hope you’re ok xx
